Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical switch operate at a high speed, by applying an electric field to a crossed position of plural transmission lines, varying a refractive index of a crystal, and causing a total reflection, in an optical transmission line consisting of an optical crystal substrate. CONSTITUTION:Mg is diffused on an optical crystal substrate 1 such as lithium niobate (LiNbO3), except areas A1, A2, B1 and B2, polishing, coating 2, etc. are executed to one side so as to make it a total reflection surface, and said areas are used as an optical transmission line. An incident light beam from the the transmission line A1 is transmitted to the line B1, and an incident light beam from the same A2 is transmitted to the line B2. On the crossed area of the two transmission lines, an electrode 3 is provided from the upper and lower surfaces, and when an electric field is applied, the refractive index is varied, the light beam is totally reflected, and it is switched to the transmission line B2 from the transmission line A1, and to the transmission line B1 from the transmission line A2. In this way, an optical switch which is operated at a high speed and has a high reliability is obtained.
