Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a waveguide type optical interferometer which does not depend on the polarization direction of incident light by charging a liquid crystal which is a high double refractive index material to a part of a light guide constituting the optical interferometer and compensating part of the double refractions of the light guide by utilizing the electro-optic effect of the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A gap 21 which is dug to the extent of crossing the light guide and arriving at a silicon substrate 1 (substrate) is formed in part of the light guide 5 and a liquid crystal layer 21a (liquid crystal) is filled in the gap 21. Electrodes 23a, 24a for controlling the liquid crystal molecular orientation of the liquid crystal layer 21a are provided in the gap 21. The double refractiveness of the light guide 5 constituting the waveguide type optical interferometer is compensated by the large refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal 21 filled into the light guide gap 21, by which the dependency of the optical interferometer on polarization is effectively eliminated. The stable operation of the optical interferometer which does not depend on the polarization direction of the incident light is thereby obtd.
