Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in definition with age which occurs in flowability by providing a liquid crystal layer via a molecular layer of a compd. which is reversibly changed in structure by light on a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal layer is provided via the molecular layer of the compd. which is reversibly changed in structure by light on the transparent substrate. A photochromic compd. is most ordinarily used as this compd. The photochromic compd. refers to a compd. which is changed in structure by the effect of light and is thereby changed in the behavior to light, for example, color tone. Provision of the molecular layer of such photochromic compd. is executed by methods usually used for perpendicular orientation of liquid crystals; for example, a method of treating the substrate with the photochromic compd. having a surface active group, a method of treating the substrate with the photochromic compd. having at least one halogen atom or a sillyl group substd. with an alkoxy group, etc. The definition by the liquid crystal having the flowability is thereby improved.
