Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the quality and contrast of display by providing a dielectric layer, which has enough refractive index and film thickness to reduce light reflected by a transparent electrode, provided on a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:The refractive index of a transparent substrate 2 is denoted as n0, the refractive index of a transparent electrode 3 on the substrate 2 as n1, and the thickness of the electrode 3 as d1; and a liquid-crystal layer 5 having the refractive index nLC is sealed in a liquid-crystal display device formed by a dielectric layer 4 having the refractive index n2 and the film thickness d2 on the electrode 3. Then, the element is constituted as n0<n1, n2<n1, and nLC<n2; and n1d1 and n2d2 satisfy the relation as shown by the expressions I and II. A display device having polarizing plates 6 and 7 on the both sides of the substrate 2 is also usable. For example, the glass having refractive index 1.52 is used as the substrate, then In2O3 as the electrode 3, SiO2, Al2O3 or polyamide resins etc. as the layer 4, and nematic liquid crystal etc. for the liquid crystal 5 are used.
