Abstract

PURPOSE:To obviate the occurrence of degradation in contrast characteristics even if a twisted nematic liquid crystal display cell is formed in multiplayers by specifying the relation between the layer thicknesses of liquid crystal layers and the refractive index differences of abnormal light and normal light. CONSTITUTION:Glass substrates 1a, 1b provided with transparent electrodes 2a, 2b and further orientation treatment layers 3a, 3b are hermetically sealed by sealing material 4, whereby the liquid crystal cell of double layer construction sealed therein with nematic liquid crystal 5 is constituted. Polarizers 6a, 6b are disposed on the outside surface of the cell and further a reflecting plate 7 is disposed on the back. The electrodes 2a, 2b are connected to a driving circuit 8 and optical displaying is executed to an observer 9. Here, the liquid crystal material and layer thickness are so selected that the product d DELTAn of the layer thickness d of the liquid crystal 5 and the difference DELTAn between the refractive index n2 of the liquid crystal 5 to abnormal light and the refractive index n0 to normal light becomes 2.0mum or over and preferably 2.5mum or over.
