PURPOSE:To enhance the display quality of a guest-host effect type color liq. crystal display element by forming a transparent thin film with a high refractive index on the liq. crystal side of a transparent substrate to increase the quantity of reflected light for an abserver. CONSTITUTION:The positive type and guest-host effect type color liq. crystal display device (symbol 4 is a transparent electrode) is manufactured by holding liq. crystal layer 10 contg. a dichromatic dye between substrates 3, 3 and laying polarizing plate 5 and reflecting plate 9 on the outside of substrate 3 of the nonobservation side. Transparent thin film 11 with a high refractive index is then formed on the liq. crystal side of substrate 3 of the observation side. Film 11 is made of material such as ZnO2, CeO2 or TiO2 with >= about 2 refractive index, and thickness (d) of film 11 is desirably set to a value within the range satisfying the equation (where n is refractive index).
