Abstract

PURPOSE:To control the intensity or phase of light propagating through an optical fiber by holding a liq. crystal between ends of two optical fibers with transparent electrodes attached and applying an electric field to the crystal through the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 3a, 3b are attached to ends of optical fibers 1a, 1b having core parts 2a, 2b, respectively. They are electrically connected to a driving power source 4 through the sides of the fibers 1a, 1b and a switch SW. A liq. crystal is sealed between both the ends of the fibers 1a, 1b. When the liq. crystal is a TN type one, the polarizing direction of light propagating through one of the fibers can be controlled. The liq. crystal substance is almost equal to high silica glass as the material of the fibers in refractive index, and the liq. crystal layer having about 10mum thickness acts as matching oil. When a cholesteric liq. crystal is used, it can be allowed to fulfil the function of a band pass filter.
