Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the light modulator of low half wavelength voltage by using the optical fiber packed with the liquid having Kerr effect in the portion corresponding to core.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid 2 having Kerr effect (such as nitrobenzene, or isotropic phase liquid crystal) is packed in a fiber-form hollow cylindrical vessel 1 made of glass or plastics and both ends thereof are sealed by end face parts 3, 4 of good light transmittance, thence a filter 6 is provided, whereby the fiber-form electro- optic effect element 21 is formed (the material of a refractive index lower than that of the liquid 2 to be sealed is used for the vessel 1). Next, a pair of electrodes 23 which apply electric field by a modulating electric power source 22 are disposed on both sides of the electro-optic effect 21 and polarizers 24, 25 are disposed before and behind the element 21, in the position relation where their polarization axes are intersected orthogonally and are inclined 45° with respect to the electrodes 23, whereby the light modulator is formed.
