A LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY CELL (1)IS PROVIDED WITH A COMPENSATION LAYER WHICH, VIEWED TRANSVERSELY TO THE CELL, HAS A BROKEN (NON-ROTATIONALLY) SYMMETRICAL REFRACTIVE INDEX PATTERN OR INDICATRIX. TO OBTAIN A SMALL ANGLE DEPENDENCE, THE ASSOCIATED BIREFRINGENCE OF THE COMPENSATION LAYER(9) IS COMPLEMENTARY TO THAT ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN VOLTAGE ACROSS THE LIQUID CRYSTAL CELL, SO THAT THE OPTICAL AXIS OFTHE COMPENSATION LAYER (9)SUBSTANTIALLY COINCIDES WITH THE DIRECTION OF THE DIRECTORS IN THE DRIVEN STATE. THE COMPENSATION LAYER (9) CAN BE MANUFACTURED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS BY MAKING USE OF CHOLESTERIC FOILS OR FOILS BASED ON DISCOTIC LC MATERIALS.(FIG. 1)
