Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of the control of a light attenuation quantity by using an electrochromic material which controls a light absorption quantity as a light attenuating element between a pair of lenses for input and output light. CONSTITUTION:The light attenuating element 10 having the electrochromic material 9 is disposed between a pair of the lenses 7 and 8 for input and output light. The light attenuating element 10 is laminated and formed on optical glass or high-polymer film so as to sandwich the electrochromic material 9 with two sheets of transparent electrodes 14. The element 10 is colored when a DC voltage is applied to the transparent electrodes 14 of said element by a light attenuating element control circuit 13. The decoloration of the colored layer is possible as well when the polarities of the transparent electrodes are inverted. The light attenuation quantity is thus controlled with the good accuracy by adjusting the polarities of the transparent electrodes 14 and the magnitude of the voltage to be impressed thereto.
