Abstract
PURPOSE:To make a display easy to see in both the night and day by providing a liq. crystal display device with a liq. crystal layer and electrodes for display exchange and attaching a negative-positive change-over switch to the electrodes in linkage with an illumination switch to turn on an illumination lamp and give a negative display in the night. CONSTITUTION:Liq. crystal layer 3 is interposed between glass plates 1, 2, and liq. crystal layer 13 for negative-positive display exchange between glass plates 2, 12. Polarizing plates 5, 6 are superposed on the outsides of plates 1, 12, respectively so that the polarizing axes of plates 5, 6 are made parallel with or perpendicular to each other. Electrodes 14 extending to the almost whole region of layer 13 are stuck to plates 2, 12, and a voltage is applied to electrodes 14 from AC power source 15 with switch 16 linking up with switch 11 of illumination lamp 7. In case of layer 3 a voltage is applied to display electrodes 4 from AC power source 9. Thus, in the daytime incident light from the plate 5 side is reflected by plate 8 to give a positive display, and in the night light source 7 is switched on to transmit light, resulting in a negative display.
