Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the light modulator smaller in size and make it usable at wide band frequencies by providing a groove between the two parallel branch paths existing between an input common path part and an output side common path part within a substrate having electro-optic effect, and providing electrodes on the two branch paths by way of a clad layer thereby forming waveguides. CONSTITUTION:Parallel branch paths 23, 24 are provided between the output end 5 of an input side common path part 3 and the input end 6 of an output side common path part 4 on the main plane 2 side of a substrate 1 having electro-optic effect and a groove 21 is provided therebetween. Next, electrodes 23, 24 are provided on branch paths 23, 24 by way of a clad layer 22. When light L is input from the input side common path and the voltage V of an AC power source 14 is applied to the electrodes 23, 24, it receives modulation in the mutually opposite directions in the branch paths 23 and 24 and the modulated output light L' is output from the output side common path 4. Since the groove 21 exists, the construction is small in size and the element may be used at a low modulating voltage over a wide frequency band.
