Abstract

PURPOSE:To operate an optical frequency modulator on low voltage and obtain realize said modulator of high speeds and wide bands by making use of the wave guiding and electrooptic effect of the device. CONSTITUTION:To operate the optical frequency modulator having the optical waveguide region constituted of the semiconductor having the triad symmetrical axis constituting of a substrate 1, nondoped layers 2, 3, clad layers 4, 5, 6, etc., the guiding direction of light is selected in the x-axis direction of the triad symmetrical axes of the crystal, electrodes 7 and 9 are grounded, and reverse bias voltage is applied to electrodes 8 and 10 in such a manner that the applied electric fields in both (x)-, (y)-directions punch through the region 3 and that the electric field intensity in the region 3 is made roughly constant. Thus, the main axis of the index ellipsoid of the region 3 rotates, whereby the light frequency is modulated.
