Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a titled device operating on low voltage by forming an optical waveguide medium of which the plane of polarization of transmitted light is changed by the electric field applied into the direction perpendicular to the transmission direction of light into multilayer structure of >=2 layers, providing conductive layers between the layers of optical modulating elements to make electrodes and applying voltage. CONSTITUTION:The propagation direction of light is taken in the optical main axis of a material, and modulating media 11, electrodes 12, polarizers 13, 14, and a photodetector 15 are provided. Now when the voltage of + and - are applied alternately to the electrodes 12 the rotation of the plane of polarization takes place in the angles of the plane of polarization of the light coming out from the outside according to the respective layer segments, so that the quantity of light passing through a polarizer 14 changes according to the angles of rotation of the plane of polarization. When one set of the electrodes are provided on the right and left surfaces of the media 11 and when the media 11 are divided by n and an electric field is applied thereto in parallel, it results in that the application of one-n-th voltage suffices to obtain the angle of rotation of the same plane of polarization.
