Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve operation at a low voltage by forming one electrode groups in an optical communication medium so that electrodes are multilayered overlapping each other at prescribed distance while the other electrode group overlaps with the said group each other. CONSTITUTION:An optical switching modulator 10 consists of a material 11 for a transparent light-transmittable medium and electric-field applying electrodes 12 and 13. In the electrode structure of the optical switching modulator 11 which switches or modulates transmitted light by applying an electric field to the light- transmittable medium 11, the one-side electrodes 12 are multilayered in parallel to the transmitted light and connected together electrically at, for example, the left surfaces, and the other-side electrodes 13 are also multilayered in parallel to the transmitted light and connected together at the right surfaces. Further, the electrodes 12 and 13 are stacked by turns to permit the light to pass between the both, so that even when a low voltage is applied between the electrodes, the operation of the optical modulation element is obtained effectively.
