Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable a polychromatic display by arranging a plurality of electrochromic layers in a superposed state. CONSTITUTION:Three electrode plates are arranged, and electrochromic (EC) substance layers and electrolyte layers are interposed among the electrodes. At this time, different kinds of EC substances which are different from each other in light absorbing characteristics are used to enable a polychromatic display. For example, an Li3N electrolyte layer D1 and an EC layer D2 are interposed between electrode plates E1 and E2, and an Li3N electrolyte layer D3 and an EC layer D4 between electrode plates E2 and E3. WO3-Au is used as the EC substance of the layer D2, and WO3 as the EC substance of the layer D4. Au-added WO3 is colored red by applying positive polarity, and by reversing the polarity, it is colored blue. WO3 is colored red by applying positive polarity, and by reversing the polarity, it is made colorless. In addition, Au-added WO3 is made transparent by applying -3V voltage, so by varying the applied voltage and changing over it, th EC layers change to transparency, red and blue to enable a polychromatic display.
