Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a steel with high surface hardness, large hardening depth and superior core strength by heating a steel contg. a predetermined amt. of titanium to a predetermined temp. range, followed by quenching and soft nitriding in a predetermined temp. range. CONSTITUTION:A steel contg. C; 0.03-0.25% and Ti; 4XC%+0.01%-4Xc%+ 1% is heated to 900-1300 deg.C, quench hardened, and soft nitrided at 450-700 deg.C by a gas soft nitriding method or the like. The steel pref. has a compsn. consisting of C; 0.03-0.25%, Si; 0.01-1%, Mn; 0.1-1.5%, Cr; 0.1-2.5%, Ti; 4XC%+ 0.01%-4XC%+1%, Al<=0.08% and the balance Fe.
