Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a case hardening steel producing a slight strain in heat treatment at high temp. such as carburizing or carbonitriding by adding, C, Si, Mn and Cr or further adding Ni and/or Mo and adjusting the ranges of C, Mn, Cr, Ni and Mo so as to satisfy a specified equation. CONSTITUTION:This low strain case hardening steel contains 0.25-0.35% C, <=1.0% Si, 0.50-1.50% Mn and 0.35-1.50% Cr or further contains <=2.0% N and/or <=0.50% Mo, and the composition is essentially adjusted so that the ranges of C, Mn, Cr, Ni and Mo satisfy the equation. When a gear is formed with this case hardening steel and subjected to surface hardening such as carburizing or carbonitriding, the resulting gear holds the high strength and has a slight error in the form of the teeth.
