PURPOSE:To obtain a surface nitrided steel which is enhanced of the strength in the core part simultaneously with surface hardening, and is suit able for automotive parts etc. by increasing the Al, Mn amounts in high Ti steeland applying solution heat treatment-soft nitriding treatment. CONSTITUTION:The steel of the composition comprising one or more kinds 0.03- 0.25% C, 0.01-1.0% Si, 1.5-2.5% Mn, 0.1-2.5% Cr, 4XC%+0.01%-4X C%+1.0% Ti, <=0.08 Al, <=2% Ni, <=2.0% Mo, <=0.35% Pb, <=0.3% S, and substantially Fe for the remainder is heated to 900-1,300 deg.C. Thence, it is rapidly quenched from this temperature region and is subjected to soft nitriding treatement in a 450-700 deg.C temperature region. Here, it is also possible to make 0.1-2.5% Mn and 0.08-2.5% Al in this steel composition. The steel of superior toughness, abrasion resistance, pitting resistance, etc. may be obtained with this composition and treating conditions.
