Abstract

PURPOSE: To develop a steel for use as pipe line highly resistant to hydrogen induced cracking, an alloy steel is added with a specified amount of Cu, Ca, etc., and its continuous cast is either annealed after rolling, or treated by quenching and annealing.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy steel to be used consists of C<0.30%, Si: 0.01 to 0,80%, Mn: 0.50 to 2.0%, P<0.04%, S<0.02%, Cu<0.80%, Ni<2.0%, Al<0.1%, Ca: 0.0005 to 0.015%, and one or more of Cr<1.0%, Nb<0.04%, V<0.10%, Mo<0.15%. The alloy is continuously cast and either annealed at temperatures of 300°C to A1 modification point, or alternatively quenched from a temperature of A3 modification point to (A3 modification point +60°C) followed by annealing at temperature in a range of 500°C to A1 modification point. Such heat treatment causes the steel structures to be annealed to bainite or annealed martensite structure, enhancing resistant to crack generation around the inclusives, resulting in an improved hydrogen crack resistivity. The steel is suitable for transport pipes for petoleum and natural gas.
