表示が存在しない場合、索引画面のアイコンが表示され
る。索引画面のアイコン表示は選択可能制御要素を含
む。選択可能制御要素がユーザにより選択される度に、
各指定される選択可能トピックのリストが提供される。
リストされる選択可能トピックがユーザにより図式的に
選択される度に、このトピックに関連する各番号付けデ
ータ・ページに対応するページ・タブのリストが表示さ
れる。次にページ・タブを図式的に指定することによ
り、索引画面の表示を要求することなく、特定のデータ
・ページが直接選択されたりする。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は一般に改良されたデータ
処理システムに関し、特にデータ処理システムにおいて
データ・アクセス効率を改良する方法及びシステムに関
する。更に詳しくは、本発明はデータ処理システムにお
いて実施される電子ブックのデータ・アクセス効率を改
良する方法及びシステムに関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】コンピュータ及びコンピュータ利用の情
報システムは、データ及び情報転送の従来形式を急速に
サポートしつつある。電子メール・システムは、マネー
ジャ及び管理者達が従来の手紙郵便システムにおけるい
わゆる"浮動（float）" 時間を最小化するために、今日
広く用いられている。電子メール・システムは、物理的
な本を模倣したいわゆる"電子ブック"へと拡張された。
電子ブックは標準のパーソナル・コンピュータ、また
は、しばしば開閉ブック式の２ページの表示を提供する
機構を有する小型携帯特殊装置により具現化される。
【０００３】物理的な本と同様、電子ブックは典型的に
は、複数の番号付けされたページ及び選択ページをアク
セスするために使用される索引を含み、選択ページは索
引内にリストされる選択トピックに対する参照を含む。
電子ブック索引内の選択トピックの図式指定は、一般に
選択トピックの参照を含む電子ブック内のページの図式
指示に相当する複数ページ・タブを表示する。マウスな
どの図式指示装置によるページ・タブの図式指定は、一
般に関連ページを表示する。
【０００４】上述されたようなシステムでは、ユーザは
電子ブック内のデータ・ページを効率的に選択しアクセ
ス可能であるが、各アクセスは選択データ・ページを直
接アクセスするために、索引ページ及びそれに関連する
ページ・タブを表示することをユーザに要求する。従っ
て、索引ページの表示を要求することなく、ユーザが索
引内にリストされる特定のトピックに関する電子ブック
内のデータ・ページを、迅速且つ効率的にアクセス可能
な方法及びシステムが必要とされる。
【０００５】
【発明が解決しようとする課題】本発明の目的は、改良
されたデータ処理システムを提供することである。
【０００６】本発明の別の目的は、データ処理システム
のデータ・アクセス効率を改善する改良された方法及び
システムを提供することである。
【０００７】本発明の更に別の目的は、データ処理シス
テムにおいて実施される電子ブックのデータ・アクセス
効率を改善する改良された方法及びシステムを提供する
ことである。
【０００８】
【課題を解決するための手段】上述の目的が以下のよう
にして達成される。表示装置、及び複数の選択可能トピ
ック及び複数の番号付けデータ・ページを含む少なくと
も１個の表示可能索引画面を有するデータ処理システム
において実施される電子ブックのデータ・アクセス効率
を改善する方法及びシステムが提供される。ユーザは索
引画面内で特定の選択可能トピックを指定でき、次に、
指定された選択可能トピックの参照を含む各番号付けデ
ータ・ページに対応するページ・タブが表示される。索
引画面の表示が存在しない場合、索引画面のアイコンが
表示される。索引画面のアイコン表示は選択可能制御要
素を含む。選択可能制御要素がユーザにより選択される
度に、各指定される選択可能トピックのリストが提供さ
れる。リストされる選択可能トピックがユーザにより図
式的に選択される度に、このトピックに関連する各番号
付けデータ・ページに対応するページ・タブのリストが
表示される。次に、ページ・タブを図式的に指定するこ
とにより、索引画面の表示を要求することなく、特定の
データ・ページが直接選択されたりする。
【０００９】本発明の上述の目的、機能及び利点が、後
述の説明から明らかにされよう。

【実施例】図１を参照すると、本発明の方法及びシステ
ムの実施例において使用されるデータ処理システム５０
が示される。データ処理システム５０はシステム・ユニ
ット５２、ビデオ表示端末５４、キーボード５６、及び
マウス５８を含む。データ処理システム５０は、ＩＢＭ
の製品であるＩＢＭ ＰＳ／２コンピュータなどの適切
なコンピュータにより実施される。"ＰＳ／２"はＩＢＭ
の登録商標である。
【００１１】図示される本発明の実施例はパーソナル・
コンピュータにおいて実施されるが、本発明はこれに限
るものではなく、例えば、知的ワークステーション、ミ
ニ・コンピュータ、または電子ブック用に特殊に設計さ
れる特殊携帯装置などの他のタイプのデータ処理システ
ムにおいて実施されても良い。本発明の図示の実施例で
は、図２乃至図５に示される表示を提供するように、ま
た図６の流れ図により示される処理を実行するように、
データ処理システム５０が適切にプログラムされる。
【００１２】図２を参照すると、本発明の方法及びシス
テムにおいて使用される索引画面６０が表される。図示
のように索引画面６０は、ユーザによって指定される複
数の選択可能トピック６２を記述する従来式の索引を図
式的に表す。本発明の図示の実施例では、各選択可能ト
ピックは、マウス・ポインタ６４を使用するユーザによ
り図式的に指定される。図式的に選択されると、特定の
選択可能トピックが強調表示または反転映像されたり、
特定のトピックの選択状態を特定の方法により図式的に
表示したりする。
【００１３】図示のように、索引画面６０内の選択可能
トピックの指定は、複数ページ・タブ６８を生成し表示
する。各ページ・タブ６８は、索引画面６０内の選択可
能トピックの参照を含む関連データ・ページ数を示す。
図２に示されるように、トピック"Analog"を選択する
と、４個のページ・タブ６８が生成され、これらの各々
はトピック"Analog"の参照を含む関連データ・ページを
示す。
【００１４】図３を参照すると、複数の選択トピックを
有する索引画面６０が示される。図示のようにユーザは
マウス・ポインタ６４を使用し、トピック６６及びトピ
ック７０を指定する。この指定に対応する僅かに異なる
図式指示の使用により、各指定トピックと特定のトピッ
クに関連するページ・タブとの相関が達成される。すな
わち、ページ・タブ６８は指定トピック６６に関連し、
ページ・タブ７２は指定トピック７０に関連することが
分かる。当業者には、ユーザによって指定された選択ト
ピックに関連するページ・タブを区別するために、色や
他の視覚的認識手段も使用可能なことが理解されよう。
【００１５】図４を参照すると、番号付けされたデータ
・ページ７４を表示するデータ・ページ画面９０が示さ
れる。更に図４には、複数のチャプタ・タブ７６、及び
索引タブ７８が表示される。当業者には、特定のチャプ
タ内に含まれる第１のデータ・ページが、チャプタ７６
を周知の選択方法により選択することによりアクセスさ
れたり、索引画面が索引タブ７８を周知の選択方法によ
り選択することにより表示されることが理解されよう。
【００１６】本発明の重要な特徴によれば、索引タブ７
８は、好適には追加の制御要素８０を含む。本発明の図
示の実施例によれば、制御要素８０の存在は、索引内の
複数のトピックが、ユーザにより図２及び図３に関連し
て述べられた方法により以前に指定され、今もその状態
を維持していることをユーザに示す。その後、後述され
るように、マウス・ポインタ６４を使用して制御要素８
０を図式選択することにより、１個以上のサブメニュー
が表示される。これらのサブメニューは、索引画面６０
の表示を要求することなく、選択トピックに関連する特
定のデータ・ページを直接アクセスするために使用され
る。もちろん、図式指定がこうしたサブメニューの有無
を示すために、制御要素８０に関連して提供されてもよ
い。例えば、ユーザにより以前に指定されたトピックが
索引内に存在しない場合、制御要素８０内の矢印を囲む
ボックスが消去されても良い。
【００１７】図５を参照すると、本発明の新規の制御要
素を示す索引タブ７８の拡大図が示される。図示のよう
に、ユーザがマウス・ポインタ６４を使用して制御要素
８０を選択すると、トピック・サブメニュー８２が表示
される。トピック・サブメニュー８２内には、複数の選
択トピック８４がリストされる。このように、以前にユ
ーザにより指定された索引画面内のこれらのトピック
は、ユーザに索引画面６０の表示の起動を要求すること
なく、トピックのサブメニュー内にテキスト式にリスト
される。更に、例えば特定のトピック"Bridge"の図式選
択は、サブメニュー８６を表示する。ページ・メニュー
８６は、トピック・サブメニュー８２から選択された選
択指定トピックの参照を含む各ページ番号のリストを含
む。その後、ページ・メニュー８６内のページ番号の図
式指定により、索引画面の表示を要求することなく、指
定トピックの参照を含む特定のデータ・ページが直接ア
クセスされる。
【００１８】このように、当業者にはユーザが索引画面
内の興味対象の複数のトピックを指定し、その後、引き
続き制御要素８０を使用することにより、索引画面６０
の表示を要求することなく、指定トピックの参照を有す
るページ番号を呼び戻せることが理解されよう。もちろ
ん、索引画面６０内で単一のトピックだけが指定される
場合には、ユーザによりマウス・ポインタ６４を使用し
て制御要素８０が選択されると、トピック・サブメニュ
ー８２及びページ・サブメニュー８６が即座に表示され
る。なぜなら、この場合、必要となる関連ページ番号リ
ストが１個に過ぎないからである。
【００１９】図６を参照すると、本発明の方法及びシス
テムを実施する処理の論理流れ図が示される。図示のよ
うに、この処理はブロック１００で開始され、その後ブ
ロック１０２に移行する。ブロック１０２では、索引画
面６０が現在表示されているか否かを判断し、肯定の場
合、処理は索引画面６０が表示されなくなるまで単に待
機する。ブロック１０２で索引画面６０がもはや表示さ
れないことが判断されると、処理はブロック１０４に移
行する。ブロック１０４は、図４及び図５に示される索
引タブ７８を表示する。
【００２０】次に処理はブロック１０６に移行する。ブ
ロック１０６は、制御要素８０（図５参照）が選択され
たか否かを判断する。否定の場合、処理は制御要素８０
が選択されるまで単に待機する。ブロック１０６で制御
要素８０が選択されたことが判断されると、処理はブロ
ック１０８に移行する。ブロック１０８はトピック・サ
ブメニュー８２などのトピック・サブメニュー内に全て
の選択トピックを表示する。
【００２１】次に処理はブロック１１０に移行する。ブ
ロック１１０はトピック・サブメニュー内にリストされ
るトピックが選択されたか否かを判断する。否定の場
合、処理はトピックが選択されるまで単に待機する。ト
ピック・サブメニュー内のトピックが選択されたことが
ブロック１１０で判断されると、処理はブロック１１２
に移行する。ブロック１１２は、トピック・サブメニュ
ー８２内にリストされる選択トピックの参照を含む関連
ページ・タブを表示する。その後、処理はブロック１１
４に移行する。ブロック１１４は特定のページ・タブが
選択されたか否かを判断し、否定の場合、処理はページ
・タブが選択されるまで単に待機する。ブロック１１４
でページ・タブが選択されたことが判断されると、処理
はブロック１１６に移行する。ブロック１１６は、選択
ページ・タブにより指示される関連データ・ページを表
示する。その後、処理はブロック１１８に移行し復帰す
る。もちろん当業者には、この処理の間の任意のポイン
トにおいて、ユーザが適切なキー・シーケンスを選択す
ることにより処理を"エスケープ"し、通常のオペレーシ
ョンに復帰可能であることが理解されよう。
【００２２】上述の説明を参考に、当業者においては、
本願が電子ブックにおける特定の選択トピックの参照を
含む続くデータ・ページが要望される度に、索引画面を
表示し、その索引画面に戻る必要なく、そのトピックに
関連する特定の番号付けデータ・ページが、直接的且つ
効率的にアクセスされる方法及びシステムを提供するこ
とが理解されよう。
【００２３】本発明は特定の実施例について述べられて
きたが、当業者には、本発明の趣旨及び範囲を逸脱する
ことなく、その形式及び詳細に渡る様々な変更が可能で
あることが理解されよう。

【発明の効果】以上説明したように、本発明によれば、
データ・アクセス効率を改善する改良されたデータ処理
システム及び方法が提供される。

  1. 【請求項１】表示装置、及び複数の選択可能トピック及
    び複数の番号付け表示可能データ・ページを含む少なく
    とも１個の表示可能索引画面を有する電子ブックにおけ
    るデータ・アクセス効率を改善する方法であって、 上記表示可能索引画面の表示中におけるユーザ選択に応
    答して、上記索引画面内の上記複数の選択可能トピック
    の少なくとも１個を指定するステップと、 上記索引画面の表示がない時に、制御要素を含む上記索
    引画面のアイコンを表示するステップと、 上記制御要素のユーザ選択に応答して、各指定選択可能
    トピックのリストを表示するステップと、 上記表示リスト内の特定の指定選択可能トピックのユー
    ザ選択に応答して、上記特定の指定選択可能トピックの
    参照を含む各上記番号付け表示可能データ・ページの選
    択可能図式指示を表示するステップと、 上記選択可能図式指示のユーザ選択に応答して、上記索
    引画面を表示することなく、特定の上記番号付け表示可
    能データ・ページをアクセスして表示するステップと、 を含む上記の方法。
  2. 【請求項２】上記選択可能トピックの指定に応答して、
    上記索引画面内に上記指定選択可能トピックの参照を含
    む各上記番号付け表示可能データ・ページの上記選択可
    能図式指示を表示するステップを含む、請求項１記載の
    方法。
  3. 【請求項３】上記選択可能図式指示がページ・タブ指示
    である、請求項２記載の方法。
  4. 【請求項４】上記電子ブックが図式指示装置を含み、 上記表示可能索引画面の表示中におけるユーザ選択に応
    答して、上記索引画面内の上記複数の選択可能トピック
    の少なくとも１個を指定するステップが、上記図式指示
    装置を使用して指定する、請求項１記載の方法。
  5. 【請求項５】上記制御要素のユーザ選択に応答して、各
    指定選択可能トピックのリストを表示するステップが、
    上記図式指示装置を使用して指定する、請求項４記載の
    方法。
  6. 【請求項６】表示装置、及び複数の選択可能トピック及
    び複数の番号付け表示可能データ・ページを含む少なく
    とも１個の表示可能索引画面を有する電子ブックにおけ
    るデータ・アクセス効率を改善するシステムであって、 上記表示可能索引画面の表示中におけるユーザ選択に応
    答して、上記索引画面内の上記複数の選択可能トピック
    の少なくとも１個を指定する手段と、 上記索引画面の表示がない時に、制御要素を含む上記索
    引画面のアイコンを表示する手段と、 上記制御要素のユーザ選択に応答して、各指定選択可能
    トピックのリストを表示する手段と、 上記表示リスト内の特定の指定選択可能トピックのユー
    ザ選択に応答して、上記特定の指定選択可能トピックの
    参照を含む各上記番号付け表示可能データ・ページの選
    択可能図式指示を表示する手段と、 上記選択可能図式指示のユーザ選択に応答して、上記索
    引画面を表示することなく、特定の上記番号付け表示可
    能データ・ページをアクセスして表示する手段と、 を含む上記のシステム。

    上記索引画面内に上記指定選択可能トピックの参照を含
