Description
[1.全体構成]
図1(A)、(B)はそれぞれ、本実施形態の表示装置100の模式的な斜視図と側面図である。表示装置100は可撓性基板102を有しており、湾曲させたり、折り曲げることが可能である。可撓性基板102上には活性領域(アクティブエリア)104が設けられる。後述するように、活性領域104は種々の絶縁膜や導電膜、半導体膜が積層され、これらによってトランジスタや容量、表示素子などが形成される。活性領域104上には、活性領域104を保護し、表示装置100に対し、十分な可撓性を維持しつつ、かつ取り扱いを容易にするために必要な物理的強度を付与するためのキャップフィルム106が設けられる。表示装置100は任意の構成として、キャップフィルム106上に偏光板114を有することができる。活性領域104、キャップフィルム106、および偏光板114は同一、あるいはほぼ同一の形状を有することができ、互いに重なる。図示していないが、表示装置100において偏光板114がキャップフィルム106を兼ねてもよい。
図2における領域140の上面図を図4に、図4の鎖線B−B’に沿った断面模式図を図5に示す。図4に示すように、可撓性基板102の端(エッジ)102aに隣接する、あるいはエッジ102aから最も近い画素132とエッジ102aの間に駆動回路134が配置される。図5では見やすさを考慮し、画素132は鎖線B−B’上に1つのトランジスタ150と表示素子160を有し、駆動回路134では1つのトランジスタ152と二つの配線154、156が鎖線B−B’と交差するとして説明を行う。また、表示素子160としては発光素子を用いる例を用いて説明を行うが、表示素子160の構成に制約はない。例えば表示素子160は液晶素子や電気泳動素子など、電圧駆動型の表示素子でもよい。
上述したように、表示装置100の活性領域104には多くの絶縁膜が含まれるが、上述した無機化合物を含むことができる絶縁膜(例えばアンダーコート200、ゲート絶縁膜204、層間膜208、絶縁膜222、パッシベーション膜250の第1の層252、第3の層256)や有機化合物を含むことができる絶縁膜(例えば平坦化膜214、隔壁224、パッシベーション膜250の第2の層254など)のうち少なくとも一つを、可撓性基板102のエッジ102aから部分的に除去することができる。具体的には図4、5に示すように、表示領域130とエッジ102aの間、あるいは駆動回路134とエッジ102aの間では、上記絶縁膜のうち少なくとも一つが部分的に除去されている。図5に示した例では、アンダーコート200、ゲート絶縁膜204、層間膜208、絶縁膜222、第1の層252、第3の層256の端部はいずれもエッジ102aと重ならず、エッジ102aよりも可撓性基板102内部に位置している。すなわち、これらの層の側壁は、エッジ102aと駆動回路134の間に位置する。換言すると、これらの層の側壁は、駆動回路134内に位置する、あるいは駆動回路134から延伸する配線のうち、エッジ102aに隣接する配線(例えば配線156)とエッジ102aの間に位置する。駆動回路134を活性領域104に設けない場合には、これらの層の側壁は、表示領域130から延伸する配線のうち、もっともエッジ102aに近い配線とエッジ102aの間に位置する。側壁とエッジ102a間の領域270では、接着層260が可撓性基板102や上記絶縁層の側壁と直接接する。接着層260を用いない場合には、キャップフィルム106が可撓性基板102や上記絶縁層の側壁と接する。
本実施形態では、第1実施形態で述べた表示装置100の製造方法を述べる。第1実施形態と同様の構成に関しては、説明を割愛することがある。
本実施形態では、第1実施形態で述べた表示装置100と異なる構成を有する表示装置300について説明する。表示装置100と同様の構成については説明を割愛することがある。
本実施形態では、第1実施形態の表示装置100とは構造が異なる表示装置310に関して説明する。第1から第4実施形態で示した構成と同様の構成に関しては説明を割愛することがある。
Claims (18)
- 活性領域と配線領域とを含有する可撓性基板を有し、
前記活性領域は、それぞれ表示素子を含む複数の画素を有し
前記配線領域は、
複数の端子、および
前記活性領域から前記複数の端子へ延伸する複数の配線を有し、
前記活性領域に含まれ、かつ前記活性領域から延伸する絶縁膜は、前記配線領域において、前記可撓性基板のエッジと、前記エッジに隣接する配線との間に側壁を有し、
前記側壁は、前記複数の配線が配置される面内において湾曲部を有し、
前記絶縁膜は、前記可撓性基板上のアンダーコート、ゲート絶縁膜、層間絶縁膜、および平坦化膜の少なくとも一つを含み、
前記エッジと前記湾曲部間の距離が曲線的に変化する表示装置。 - 前記エッジ上の位置に対する前記距離のプロットが曲線で表されるように変化する、請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記距離は、前記面内における前記エッジの法線の、前記エッジから前記側壁までの距離である、請求項1に記載の表示装置。
