- 複数の表示パネルが重ね合わされて配置され、それぞれの前記表示パネルに画像を表示する表示装置であって、
観察者に近い位置に配置された第1表示パネルと、前記第1表示パネルより観察者から遠い位置に配置された第2表示パネルにおいて、前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域より大きく、
前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、平面的に見て前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域に対向する対向表示領域と、前記対向表示領域の周囲の拡張表示領域とを含み、
前記第2表示パネルは、前記拡張表示領域に、前記対向表示領域の端部に表示する画像と同じ画像を表示し、
前記拡張表示領域の幅は、前記第1表示パネルを構成する、前記第2表示パネル側のガラス基板における観察者側の面から、前記第2表示パネルを構成する、前記第1表示パネル側のガラス基板における観察者側とは反対側の面までの距離と、前記各ガラス基板の屈折率とに基づいて設定される、
ことを特徴とする表示装置。 - 複数の表示パネルが重ね合わされて配置され、それぞれの前記表示パネルに画像を表示する表示装置であって、
観察者に近い位置に配置された第1表示パネルと、前記第1表示パネルより観察者から遠い位置に配置された第2表示パネルにおいて、前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域より大きく、
前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、平面的に見て前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域に対向する対向表示領域と、前記対向表示領域の周囲の拡張表示領域とを含み、
前記第2表示パネルは、前記拡張表示領域に、前記対向表示領域の端部に表示する画像と同じ画像を表示し、
前記拡張表示領域の幅をt1とし、前記第1表示パネルを構成する、前記第2表示パネル側のガラス基板の屈折率をn1とし、前記第2表示パネルを構成する、前記第1表示パネル側のガラス基板の屈折率をn2とし、前記第1表示パネルを構成する、前記第2表示パネル側のガラス基板における観察者側の面から、前記第2表示パネルを構成する、前記第1表示パネル側のガラス基板における観察者側とは反対側の面までの距離をdとした場合、
を満たす(ただし、n=(n1+n2)/2とする。)、
ことを特徴とする表示装置。 - 平面的に見て、前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域の外周部は、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域の外周部より外側に位置している、
ことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の表示装置。 - 前記複数の表示パネルそれぞれの画像表示領域は、該表示パネルが配置される位置が観察者から遠い程大きい、
ことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の表示装置。 - 入力映像信号に基づいて、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域にカラー画像を表示するための第1画像データと、前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域に白黒画像を表示するための第2画像データとを生成する画像処理部をさらに含む、
ことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の表示装置。 - 前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、平面的に見て前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域に対向する対向表示領域と、前記対向表示領域の周囲の拡張表示領域とを含み、
前記画像処理部は、前記入力映像信号に基づいて前記対向表示領域用の画像データを生成するとともに、前記対向表示領域用の画像データに基づいて前記拡張表示領域用の画像データを生成することによって、前記第2画像データを生成する、
ことを特徴とする請求項5に記載の表示装置。 - 複数の表示パネルが重ね合わされて配置され、それぞれの前記表示パネルに画像を表示する表示装置であって、
観察者に近い位置に配置された第1表示パネルと、前記第1表示パネルより観察者から遠い位置に配置された第2表示パネルにおいて、前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域より大きく、
前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域は、平面的に見て前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域に対向する対向表示領域と、前記対向表示領域の周囲の拡張表示領域とを含み、
前記第2表示パネルの画像表示領域には、駆動回路から画像表示用の信号が供給される複数の信号線が配置されており、
前記拡張表示領域では、前記駆動回路における1つの出力端子に複数の前記信号線が電気的に接続されている、
表示装置。 - 前記1つの出力端子に電気的に接続される前記信号線の本数は、前記出力端子の位置が前記対向表示領域に近い程、少ない、
ことを特徴とする請求項7に記載の表示装置。 - 前記拡張表示領域では、前記1つの出力端子に電気的に接続された複数の前記信号線には、前記画像表示用の信号が同時に供給される、
ことを特徴とする請求項8に記載の表示装置。 - 平面的に見て、前記拡張表示領域に配置される複数の画素は、前記第1表示パネルの画像表示領域の周囲に形成されるブラックマトリクスに重なっている、
