1)誘電率(ε‖)の測定:よく洗浄したガラス基板にオクタデシルトリエトキシシラン(0.16mL)のエタノール(20mL)溶液を塗布した。ガラス基板をスピンナーで回転させたあと、150℃で1時間加熱した。2枚のガラス基板の間隔(セルギャップ)が4μmであるVA素子に試料を入れ、この素子を紫外線で硬化する接着剤で密閉した。この素子にサイン波(0.5V、1kHz)を印加し、2秒後に液晶分子の長軸方向における誘電率(ε‖)を測定した。
2)誘電率(ε⊥)の測定:よく洗浄したガラス基板にポリイミド溶液を塗布した。このガラス基板を焼成した後、得られた配向膜にラビング処理をした。2枚のガラス基板の間隔(セルギャップ)が9μmであり、ツイスト角が80度であるTN素子に試料を注入した。この素子にサイン波(0.5V、1kHz)を印加し、2秒後に液晶分子の短軸方向における誘電率(ε⊥)を測定した。
化合物(T−1)(25.0g)、アクリル酸(7.14g)、4−ジメチルアミノピリジン(DMAP;1.21g)、およびジクロロメタン(300ml)を反応器に入れ、0℃に冷却した。そこへ1,3−ジシクロヘキシルカルボジイミド(DCC;24.5g)のジクロロメタン(125ml)溶液をゆっくりと滴下し、室温に戻しつつ12時間攪拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層をジクロロメタンで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、ヘプタン:トルエン=2:1)で精製した。さらにソルミックス(登録商標)A−11からの再結晶により精製して、化合物(T−2)(11.6g;38%)を得た。なお、ソルミックス(登録商標)A−11は、エタノール(85.5%)、メタノール(13.4%)とイソプロピルアルコール(1.1%)の混合物であり、日本アルコール販売(株)から入手した。
パラホルムアルデヒド(2.75g)、1,4−ジアザビシクロ[2.2.2]オクタン(DABCO;4.62g)、および水(40ml)を反応器に入れ、室温で15分間撹拌した。そこへ化合物(T−2)(6.31g)のTHF(90ml)溶液を滴下し、室温で72時間攪拌した。反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を水で洗浄して、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、トルエン:酢酸エチル=5:1)で精製した。さらに再結晶(容積比、ヘプタン:トルエン=1:1)により精製して、化合物(PC−1)(1.97g;29%)を得た。

化合物(T−11)(15.0g)、N,N−ジメチル−4−アミノピリジン(DMAP)(9.33g)、メルドラム酸(9.54g)およびジクロロメタン(250ml)を反応器に入れ、0℃に冷却した。そこへN,N’−ジシクロヘキシルカルボジイミド(DCC)(15.7g)をゆっくりと加え、室温に戻しつつ12時間攪拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層をジクロロメタンで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮した。残渣、エタノール(250ml)を反応器に入れ、70℃で撹拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を食塩水に注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、ヘプタン:トルエン=1:1)で精製して、化合物(T−12)(10.2g;55%)を得た。
水素化アルミニウムリチウム(0.6g)およびTHF(100ml)を反応器に入れて氷冷した。化合物(T−12)(10.2g)のTHF(100ml)溶液をゆっくりと加え、室温に戻しつつ3時間撹拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を食塩水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、トルエン:酢酸エチル=1:1)で精製して、化合物(T−13)(7.35g;81%)を得た。
化合物(T−13)(7.35g)、トリエチルアミン(3.75ml)、N,N−ジメチル−4−アミノピリジン(DMAP)(0.27g)、ジクロロメタン(200ml)を反応器に入れ、0℃に冷却した。TIPSCl(トリイソプロピルシリルクロリド)(5.05ml)をゆっくり滴下し、室温に戻しつつ24時間撹拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を食塩水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、トルエン:酢酸エチル=19:1)で精製して、化合物(T−14)(6.50g;60%)を得た。
化合物(T−14)(6.50g)、トリエチルアミン(3.77ml)、THF(200ml)を反応器に入れ、0℃に冷却した。そこへメタクリロイルクロリド(2.00ml)をゆっくりと滴下し、室温に戻しつつ4時間攪拌した。不溶物を濾別した後、反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、トルエン:ヘプタン=1:1)で精製して、化合物(T−15)(4.70g;63%)を得た。
化合物(T−15)(4.70g)、THF(100ml)を反応器に入れ、0℃に冷却した。そこへTBAF(1.00M;THF溶液;10.3ml)をゆっくりと加え、室温に戻しつつ1時間攪拌した。反応混合物を水に注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。一緒にした有機層を食塩水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(容積比、トルエン:酢酸エチル=9:1)で精製し、化合物(T−16)(1.50g;45%)を得た。
化合物(T−16)(1.50g)を原料として用い、合成例2の第4工程と同様の手法により、化合物(T−17)(1.51g;55%)を得た。

1.原料

実施例1
組成物(M51)に極性化合物(PC−1)を1重量%の割合で、さらに重合性化合物(RM−1)を0.3重量%の割合で添加した。この混合物を2枚のガラス基板の間隔(セルギャップ)が3.5μmである、配向膜を有しない素子に真空注入した。この素子に下記表4に記載のUV1光源の光源1を用いて紫外線を照射(1.4J)することによって、極性化合物(PC−1)を重合させた。続いて、未反応の極性化合物、重合性化合物を反応させるため、UV2光源(ブラックライト;F40T10/BL U−355)を用いて紫外線を照射(15J)照射した。その後、前述の方法でこの素子のVHRとプレチルト角を測定した。VHRは86.4%、プレチルト角は0.9度であった。
実施例2から39および比較例1から27では、表5に示す組成物に極性化合物および重合性化合物を添加して調製した混合物を用いてセル作製条件を表5に示す以外は実施例1と同様にして配向膜を有しない素子を作製した。実施例1と同様な方法でVHR、プレチルト角を測定した。結果を、実施例1を含め表5にまとめた。
Claims (19)
- 配向膜を有さない対向配置されている一対の基板と、前記一対の基板それぞれの対向している面の一方または両方に形成されている電極群からなる基板間に形成される液晶層として、液晶化合物および重合性化合物を含む液晶組成物を含有し、該重合性化合物の少なくとも1つが、極性アンカー基を有する化合物である液晶表示素子を製造するにあたり、254nmと313nmの積算光量比(313nm/254nm)が10以上の条件で、前記重合性化合物を反応させて、配向制御層を形成させる液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 電圧を印加しながら重合性化合物を反応させる、請求項1に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 電圧が20V以下である請求項2に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 重合性化合物として、式(1)で表される化合物、式(AI−1)で表される化合物の群から選択された、少なくとも1つの極性化合物を含有する請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。

式(1−1)から式(1−9)において、R1は、水素、ハロゲン、炭素数1から12のアルキル、炭素数1から12のアルコキシ、炭素数2から12のアルケニル、少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた炭素数1から12のアルキル、または少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた炭素数2から12のアルケニルであり;Z1は、単結合、−CH2CH2−、−CH=CH−、−C≡C−、−COO−、−OCO−、−CF2O−、−OCF2−、−CH2O−、−OCH2−、または−CF=CF−であり;Sp1およびSp2は独立して、単結合または炭素数1から7のアルキレンであり、このアルキレンにおいて、少なくとも1つの−CH2−は、−O−、−COO−、または−OCO−で置き換えられてもよく、少なくとも1つの−CH2CH2−は、−CH=CH−で置き換えられてもよく、これらの基において、少なくとも1つの水素は、フッ素で置き換えられてもよく;L1、L2、L3、L4、L5、L6、L7、L8、L9、L10、L11、およびL12は独立して、水素、フッ素、メチル、またはエチルである。
式(AI−2)から式(AI−21)において、
R11は炭素数1から10のアルキルであり;
Z11、Z12、およびZ13は独立して、単結合、−CH2CH2−、または−(CH2)4−であり;
Sp12、Sp13、およびSp14は独立して、単結合または炭素数1から5のアルキレンであり、このアルキレンにおいて、少なくとも1つの−CH2−は、−O−で置き換えられてもよく;
L1、L2、L3、L4、L5、L6、L7、L8、L9、L10、L11、およびL12は独立して、水素、フッ素、メチル、またはエチルであり;
lは、1、2、3、4、5、または6である。 - 液晶組成物が、液晶組成物の重量に基づいて、重合性化合物の割合が0.05重量%から10重量%の範囲である、請求項1から5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 液晶組成物が、第一成分として式(2)で表される化合物の群から選択された少なくとも1つの化合物を含有する、請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
式(2)において、R3およびR4は独立して、炭素数1から12のアルキル、炭素数1から12のアルコキシ、炭素数2から12のアルケニル、または炭素数2から12のアルケニルオキシであり;環Cおよび環Eは独立して、1,4−シクロへキシレン、1,4−シクロへキセニレン、1,4−フェニレン、少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた1,4−フェニレン、またはテトラヒドロピラン−2,5−ジイルであり;環Dは、2,3−ジフルオロ−1,4−フェニレン、2−クロロ−3−フルオロ−1,4−フェニレン、2,3−ジフルオロ−5−メチル−1,4−フェニレン、3,4,5−トリフルオロナフタレン−2,6−ジイル、または7,8−ジフルオロクロマン−2,6−ジイルであり;Z2およびZ3は独立して、単結合、−CH2CH2−、−CH2O−、−OCH2−、−COO−、または−OCO−であり;bは、1、2、または3であり、cは、0または1であり、そしてbとcとの和は3以下である。 - 液晶組成物が、液晶組成物の重量に基づいて、第一成分の割合が10重量%から90重量%の範囲である、請求項7または8に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 液晶組成物が、第二成分として式(3)で表される化合物の群から選択された少なくとも1つの化合物を含有する、請求項1から9のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
式(3)において、R5およびR6は独立して、炭素数1から12のアルキル、炭素数1から12のアルコキシ、炭素数2から12のアルケニル、少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた炭素数1から12のアルキル、または少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた炭素数2から12のアルケニルであり;環Fおよび環Gは独立して、1,4−シクロへキシレン、1,4−フェニレン、2−フルオロ−1,4−フェニレン、または2,5−ジフルオロ−1,4−フェニレンであり;Z4は、単結合、−CH2CH2−、−CH2O−、−OCH2−、−COO−、または−OCO−であり;dは、1、2、または3である。 - 液晶組成物が、液晶組成物の重量に基づいて、第二成分の割合が10重量%から70重量%の範囲である、請求項10または11に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 極性アンカー基を有さない重合性化合物をさらに含有する、請求項1から12のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 極性アンカー基を有さない重合性化合物の少なくとも1つが、式(4)で表される化合物の群から選択された重合性化合物である、請求項1から13のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。

式(4−1)から式(4−28)において、P1、P2、およびP3は独立して、式(P−1)から式(P−3)で表される基の群から選択された重合性基であり、ここでM1、M2、およびM3は独立して、水素、フッ素、炭素数1から5のアルキル、または少なくとも1つの水素がフッ素または塩素で置き換えられた炭素数1から5のアルキルであり;
Sp3、Sp4、およびSp5は独立して、単結合または炭素数1から10のアルキレンであり、このアルキレンにおいて、少なくとも1つの−CH2−は、−O−、−COO−、−OCO−、または−OCOO−で置き換えられてもよく、そして少なくとも1つの−CH2CH2−は、−CH=CH−または−C≡C−で置き換えられてもよく、これらの基において、少なくとも1つの水素は、フッ素または塩素で置き換えられてもよい。 - 液晶組成物が、液晶組成物の重量に基づいて、極性アンカー基を有さない重合性化合物の割合が0.03重量%から10重量%の範囲である、請求項14から16のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子の製造方法。
- 請求項1から17のいずれか1項に記載の製造方法で製造される液晶表示素子。
- 液晶表示素子の動作モードが、IPSモード、VAモード、FFSモード、またはFPAモードであり、液晶表示素子の駆動方式がアクティブマトリックス方式である、請求項18に記載の液晶表示素子。
