Description
本明細書における用語および記号の定義は下記の通りである。
「nx」は面内の屈折率が最大になる方向(すなわち、遅相軸方向)の屈折率である。「ny」は面内で遅相軸と直交する方向(すなわち、進相軸方向)の屈折率である。「nz」は厚み方向の屈折率である。
x方向(遅相軸)の屈折率nxと、y方向(進相軸)の屈折率nyとの間には、次式の関係がある。

(2)面内位相差(Ro)
「Ro」は、波長λ(nm)の光で測定したフィルムの面内位相差である。本実施形態では、可視光の中心付近、例えば、500〜600nmの間の任意の波長λが用いられる。面内位相差Roは、フィルムの厚みをd(nm)としたとき、以下の式で求められる。
Ro=(nx−ny)×d
(3)厚み方向位相差(Rth)
「Rth」は、波長λ(nm)の光で測定したフィルムの厚み方向位相差である。厚み方向位相差Rthは、フィルムの厚みをd(nm)としたとき、以下の式で求められる。
Rth={(nx+ny)/2−nz}×d
(4)Nz係数
Nz係数は、以下の式で求められる。
Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)
(5)ネガティブCプレート
ネガティブCプレートは、屈折率の関係を模式的に示す屈折率楕円体が「nx=ny>nz」の関係を有する位相差フィルムである。
図1は、本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置1の構成を示す断面図である。液晶表示装置1は、液晶パネル(LCP)20、一対の偏光板(POL)10−1、10−2、一対の位相差板(λ/4)11−1、11−2、及び一対のTAC(トリアセチルセルロース)フィルム12−1、12−2を備える。図1において、図面の理解を容易にするために、偏光板に“POL”、位相差板に“λ/4”を付記している。
次に、液晶パネル20の構成の一例について説明する。図4は、液晶パネル20の構成を示す断面図である。
次に、上記のように構成された液晶表示装置1の動作について説明する。図5は、オフ状態における液晶表示装置1の動作を説明する図である。図5には、表示面側(断面図の上)から見た配向状態を示している。なお、以下の動作は、画面に垂直方向に進む光に対する説明である。
次に、本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置1の適用例(実施例)について説明する。本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置1は、ヘッドアップディスプレイ(HUD)装置に適用することができる。
次に、比較例に係る液晶表示装置について説明する。図15は、比較例に係る液晶表示装置の構成を示す断面図である。
以上詳述したように本実施形態では、液晶表示装置1は、垂直配向(VA)型である液晶パネル20と、液晶パネル20を挟むTACフィルム12−1、12−2と、TACフィルム12−1、12−2を挟む位相差板11−1、11−2と、位相差板11−1、11−2を挟む偏光板10−1、10−2とを備える。そして、オフ状態の液晶層22は、ポジティブCプレートから構成されるのに対して、TACフィルム12−1、12−2は、ネガティブCプレートから構成される。
Claims (4)
- 光源部と、
前記光源部からの光を透過し、垂直配向(VA)型である液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルを挟む第1及び第2TAC(トリアセチルセルロース)フィルムと、
前記第1及び第2TACフィルムを挟む第1及び第2位相差板と、
前記第1及び第2位相差板を挟む第1及び第2偏光板と、
を具備し、
前記液晶パネルの表示面の垂線は、前記光源部の光出射面の垂線に対して傾いており、
前記第1及び第2偏光板はそれぞれ、互いに概略直交する第1及び第2吸収軸を有し、
前記第1及び第2位相差板はそれぞれ、互いに概略直交する第1及び第2遅相軸を有し、
前記第1及び第2遅相軸はそれぞれ、前記第1及び第2吸収軸と概略45°で交差し、
前記第1及び第2TACフィルムはそれぞれ、互いに概略直交する第3及び第4遅相軸を有し、
前記第1及び第2TACフィルムの各々は、厚み方向位相差が20nm以上かつ70nm以下であり、面内位相差が7nm以下であり、
前記第1及び第2位相差板の各々は、面内位相差が130nm以上かつ150nm以下であり、Nz係数が1.4以上かつ1.7以下であり、
nxを遅相軸方向の屈折率、nyを進相軸方向の屈折率、nzを厚み方向の屈折率とすると、
Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)
であることを特徴とするヘッドアップディスプレイ装置。 - 前記第1及び第2TACフィルムの各々は、ネガティブCプレートから構成されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のヘッドアップディスプレイ装置。
- 前記第1及び第2位相差板の各々は、1/4波長板から構成されることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載のヘッドアップディスプレイ装置。
- 前記液晶パネルを透過した光を表示部材に向けて反射する反射部材をさらに具備することを特徴とする請求項1乃至3のいずれかに記載のヘッドアップディスプレイ装置。
