Description
以下、本発明の第1の実施形態について説明する。
最適面内位相差=0.235×波長(λ)−35.3 …(1)
また、cプレートの最適な負の位相差は、図6から下記(2)式に示すようになる。
最適な負の位相差=−0.1975×波長(λ)+291.05 …(2)
本願発明者等は、更に実験を進めた結果、aプレートの隣にある偏光板の保護フィルムとして使用されているTAC(トリアセチルセルロース)フィルムによってaプレートの最適な値が左右されることが判明した。そして、上記(1)式を発展させて、保護層であるTACフィルムの緑波長における負の位相差をRTAC 、入射光の波長をλとすると、aプレートの最適面内位相差は、下記(3)式に示すようになるとの知見を得た。
最適面内位相差=0.235×λ−(RTAC −50)/2−35
=0.235×λ−RTAC /2−10 …(3)
更に、種々実験を行った結果、面内位相差が下記(4)式の範囲内にあるときには、従来に比べて表示特性を改善することができることが判明した。
面内位相差(nm)=(0.235±0.02)×λ−RTAC /2
−10±20 …(4)
また、cプレートの最適な負の位相差は、液晶層のΔndに依存している。偏光板に用いられる保護層の緑波長における負の位相差をRTAC 、液晶層の緑(Green )波長におけるΔndをRLCG 、光の波長をλとすると、cプレートの最適な負の位相差は下記(5)式に示すようになる。
最適な負の位相差=−0.1975×λ+RLCG +55−RTAC ×2 …(5)
更に、種々実験を行った結果、負の位相差が下記(6)式の範囲内にあるときには、従来に比べて表示特性を改善することができることが判明した。
負の位相差(nm)=−(0.2±0.02)×λ+RLCG +55
−RTAC ×2±30 …(6)
このように、本実施形態においては、aプレート及びcプレートの入力光の波長に対する位相差を最適化しているので、青色光や赤色光の斜め方向への光漏れが従来に比べてより一層低減される。これにより、本実施形態の液晶表示装置は,従来に比べてより良好な表示特性が得られる。
図10は本実施形態の変形例1を示す模式図である。この図10において、図5と同一物には同一符号を付して、その詳しい説明は省略する。
図11は本実施形態の変形例2を示す模式図である。この図11において、図5と同一物には同一符号を付して、その詳しい説明は省略する。
図12は本実施形態の変形例3を示す模式図である。この図12において、図5と同一物には同一符号を付して、その詳しい説明は省略する。
図13は、本発明の第2の実施形態の液晶表示装置の構成を示す模式図である。なお、本実施形態は、本発明をMVA型液晶表示装置に適用した例を示している。

前記液晶パネルの一方の面側に配置された第1の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルの他方の面側に配置された第2の偏光板とを有する液晶表示装置において、
前記第1の偏光板と前記第2の偏光板との間に、380乃至780nmの波長範囲における面内位相差が光の波長が長いほど大きい第1の位相差層と、380乃至780nmの波長範囲における負の位相差が光の波長が長いほど小さい第2の位相差層との少なくとも一方を有することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
前記液晶パネルの一方の面側に配置された第1の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルの他方の面側に配置された第1の偏光板とを有する液晶表示装置において、
前記第1の偏光板と前記第2の偏光板との間に、380乃至780nmの波長範囲における面内位相差が光の波長が長いほど大きい第1の位相差層と、380乃至780nmの波長範囲における負の位相差が光の波長が長いほど小さい第2の位相差層との両方を有することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。

(付記4)前記第1及び第2の偏光板のうち前記第2の位相差層に近接する偏光板の保護層の緑波長における負の位相差をRTAC 、前記液晶パネルの液晶層の緑波長におけるΔndをRLCG 、光の波長をλとしたときに、前記第2の位相差層の負の位相差(nm)が下記式で示す範囲内であることを特徴とする付記1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。

前記液晶パネルと前記第2の偏光板との間にのみ、前記液晶パネルの液晶層の屈折率異方性を補償する複数枚の屈折率異方性補償フィルムが配置されていることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
(付記8)前記屈折率異方性補償フィルムの面内方向の屈折率をnx,nyとし、フィルム面に対し垂直な方向の屈折率をnzとしたときに、nx≧ny>nzの関係が成り立つことを特徴とする付記7に記載の液晶表示装置。

Claims (2)
- 一対の基板間に垂直配向型液晶を封入してなる液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルの一方の面側に配置された光源と、
前記液晶パネルと前記光源との間に配置された第1の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルの他方の面側に配置された第2の偏光板と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第1の偏光板との間に配置された第1の円偏光子と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の偏光板との間に配置された第2の円偏光子と、
前記液晶パネルと前記第2の偏光板との間にのみ配置され、前記液晶パネルの液晶層の屈折率異方性を補償する複数の屈折率異方性フィルムとを有し、
前記複数の屈折率異方性フィルムは、面内方向の屈折率のnx軸が交互に直交するように配置されていることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記屈折率異方性補償フィルムの面内方向の屈折率をnx,nyとし、フィルム面に対し垂直な方向の屈折率をnzとしたときに、nx≧ny>nzの関係が成り立つことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
