In −
実施例及び比較例で製造された液晶セルに対してヘイズメータ、NDH−5000SPを利用して、ASTM方式で透過度及びヘイズを測定した。
表面に垂直電界の印加ができるように形成されたITO(Indium Tin Oxide)透明電極層と公知の垂直配向膜が順次形成されている2枚のPC(polycarbonate)フィルムを、前記配向膜が互いに対向し、間隔が約9μm程度となるように離隔配置させた後に、前記離隔配置された2枚のPCフィルムの間に液晶組成物を注入し、エッジ(edge)をシーリングして液晶セルを製作した。前記液晶組成物は、スメクチックA相を示す液晶化合物(HJA151200−000、HCCH社製)、異方性染料(X12、BASF社製)及び下記の化学式Aの正イオンと下記の化学式Bの負イオンを含むイオン性化合物を99.2:0.7:0.1の重量比率(液晶化合物:異方性染料:イオン性化合物)で混合して製造されたものを用いた。製造された液晶セルは、電圧が印加されていない場合に、透過率が約62.39%、ヘイズが約1.36%であった(以下、非ヘイズモード状態と称することがある。)。

電極層表面に配向膜が形成されていないPCフィルムを用いたことを除いては実施例1と同じ方式で液晶セルを製造した。製造された液晶セルは電圧が印加されていない場合に、透過率が約36.31%で、ヘイズが約90.28%であった(以下、非ヘイズモード状態と称することがある。)。
イオン性化合物として、前記化学式Aの正イオンと下記の化学式Cの負イオンを有する化合物を用いたことを除いては実施例2と同じ方式で液晶セルを製造した。製造された液晶セルは電圧が印加されていない場合に、透過率が約35.80%で、ヘイズが約88.28%であった(以下、非ヘイズモード状態と称することがある。)。

実施例及び比較例で製造されたそれぞれの液晶セルのITO透明電極層に電源を連結し、駆動電圧を印加しながらモードをスイッチングさせてスイッチングに要求される電圧を評価した。すなわち、実施例1のように非ヘイズモードである場合には、そのモードを、透過度が40%以下で、ヘイズが90%以上であるヘイズモードにスイッチングするために要求される電圧を測定し、比較例1や実施例2のようなヘイズモードである場合に、そのモードを、透過率が60%以上で、ヘイズが2%以下である非ヘイズモードに転換させるために要求される電圧を測定した。図8は実施例1の液晶セルの非ヘイズモードでの状態を測定したもので、図9は実施例1の液晶セルのヘイズモードでの状態を測定したものである。

Claims (17)
- 対向配置された2つの基板;及び前記2つの基板の間に存在し、スメクチック液晶化合物及び下記の化学式1の負イオンを有するイオン性化合物を含む液晶層を有する、双安定液晶セルであって、
前記双安定液晶セルは80V以下の電圧でヘイズが80%以上であるヘイズモードとヘイズが10%以下である非ヘイズモードとの間をスイッチングすることができる、双安定液晶セル:

化学式1でnは2以上の数である。 - 液晶化合物はスメクチックA液晶化合物である、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- スメクチック液晶化合物は下記の化学式2で表示される化合物である、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル:
- 化学式1でnは3〜10の範囲内の数である、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- イオン性化合物は含窒素オニウム塩、含硫黄オニウム塩または、含リンオニウム塩である、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- イオン性化合物は下記の化学式4〜7中のいずれか一つで表示される正イオンを含む、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル:
- イオン性化合物の液晶層内での比率が0.005重量%〜5.0重量%の範囲内である、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 透過度が85%以上である透過モードと透過度が83%以下であるホワイトモードとの間をスイッチングすることができるように形成された、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 液晶層は異方性染料をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 異方性染料は0.01重量%〜2重量%の範囲内の割合で液晶層に含まれる、請求項9に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 透過度が50%以上である透過モードと透過度が40%以下であるブラックモードとの間をスイッチングすることができるように形成された、請求項9に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 液晶層はポリマーネットワークをさらに含む、請求項1に記載の液晶セル。
- ポリマーネットワークは40重量%以下の比率で液晶層に含まれる、請求項12に記載の液晶セル。
- 基板の液晶層の側面に存在する配向膜をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 基板の液晶層の側面に存在する電極層をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の双安定液晶セル。
- 請求項1に記載された液晶セルを含む、光変調装置。
- 請求項1に記載された液晶セルを含む、スマートウインドウ。
