本発明の薄ガラス長尺体の連結部においては、上記のとおり、薄ガラス10と靭性フィルム20、20’とが重なり合うことなく、連結シート30、30’を介して連結されている。このような構成であることにより、本発明の薄ガラス長尺体は、以下の効果を奏する。すなわち、連結部における段差が最小限であるため、ロール状に巻き取った際に、連結部の上下にある薄ガラスへの負荷が小さく、薄ガラスの破損が防止される。また、連結部が加工ロールを通過する際に、薄ガラス長尺体の急激な物性変化(すなわち、薄ガラスと靭性フィルムとの間における物性の不連続性の影響)を軽減して、薄ガラスにかかる負荷を小さくすることができる。また、薄ガラスと靭性フィルムとを重ね合わせて固定した場合には、靭性フィルムの収縮により薄ガラスが破損するおそれがあるが、本発明の薄ガラス長尺体は、靭性フィルムの収縮の影響が薄ガラスに及ばない。したがって、本発明の薄ガラス長尺体を、靭性フィルムの収縮が生じるような処理または加工(例えば、加熱処理)に供した場合でも、薄ガラスの破損を防止して、安定的な処理または加工が可能となる。さらに、上記連結シートは、薄ガラスの保護フィルムとしても機能する。薄ガラスの長さ方向両端に連結シートが積層されていることにより、脆弱な薄ガラスの端部を保護して、薄ガラスの破損が防止される。また、仮に、連結部において薄ガラスが割れた場合にも、該薄ガラスの飛散が防止され、製品へのカレットの付着が防止される。
上記薄ガラスは、板状のものであれば、任意の適切なものが採用され得る。上記薄ガラスは、組成による分類によれば、例えば、ソーダライムガラス、ホウ酸ガラス、アルミノ珪酸ガラス、石英ガラス等が挙げられる。また、アルカリ成分による分類によれば、無アルカリガラス、低アルカリガラスが挙げられる。好ましくは、無アルカリガラスが用いられる。強度および化学的耐久性に優れるからである。上記薄ガラス長尺体が複数の薄ガラスを備える場合、複数の薄ガラスは同分類の薄ガラスであってもよく、異なる分類の薄ガラスであってもよい。
上記靱性フィルムを構成する材料としては、本発明の効果が得られる限り、任意の適切な材料が選択され得る。靱性フィルムを構成する材料としては、薄ガラスよりも高靱性の材料が用いられ、例えば、樹脂、金属等が挙げられる。樹脂としては、ポリエチレンテレフタレート系樹脂、ポリイミド系樹脂、ポリアミド系樹脂、ポリエチレンナフタレート系樹脂、ポリカーボネート系樹脂、シクロオレフィン系樹脂等が挙げられる。なかでも、ポリエチレンテレフタレート系樹脂が好ましく用いられる。金属としては、アルミニウム、ステンレス、銅、鉄、鉛等が挙げられる。なかでも、アルミニウムまたはステンレスが好ましく用いられる。本発明の薄ガラス長尺体は複数の靱性フィルムを備えるが、複数の靱性フィルムは同じ材料から構成されていてもよく、異なる材料から構成されていてもよい。

- 長尺状の薄ガラスから構成される本体部と、
連結部を介して該本体部の長さ方向両端に配置された、靱性フィルムから構成されるハンドリング部とを備え、
該連結部において、該薄ガラスと該靱性フィルムとが長さ方向に対向し、かつ、該薄ガラスおよび該靭性フィルムの両面に連結シートが積層され、
該連結シートにより、該薄ガラスと該靭性フィルムとが連結されている、
