Description
特に、TN型の液晶は構造が簡易で効率が良いという利点を有する一方、どうしても視野角が狭いという問題があった。また、他の型の液晶についても、程度の違いはあるものの同様の問題があった。
ここで図1では紙面上が観察者側となる。
ただし、TN型に限られることなく、他の型の液晶パネル(STN、VA、MVA、IPS、OCB等)が適用されることを妨げるものではなく、このような他の型の液晶パネルでもその効果を奏するものとなる。
面光源装置20は、液晶パネル15のうち、観察者側とは反対側に配置され、液晶パネル15に面状の光を出射する照明装置である。図1〜図3からわかるように、面光源装置20は、エッジライト型の面光源装置として構成され、導光板21と、光源25と、光学シート30と、反射シート35と、を有している。
条件A:断面三角形形状の頂角以外の角、すなわち、断面三角形形状の基部22上に位置する底角の角度θ1、θ2が、25°以上45°以下である。
条件B:単位光学要素23aの底辺の長さWaに対する、単位光学要素23aの高さHaの比(Ha/Wa)が、0.2以上0.5以下である。
条件Aおよび条件Bの少なくとも一方が満たされる場合、後述するように、導光板21から出光する光のうち、単位光学要素23aが並列される方向(図4の紙面左右方向)に沿った成分について極めて効果的に集光作用が及ぼされる。
一方、基部22の厚さは、0.5mm〜6mmとすることができる。
なお、本実施形態では、性能に加え、量産性、価格、入手可能性等の観点から、好ましい態様としてPETを主成分とする樹脂によって基材層41を構成した。
透過部および間部の斜面の傾斜角度(図7のθk)は、シート面法線に対して5度〜15度程度が好ましい。θkを小さくし過ぎると視野角を広げる効果が小さく、拡大層としての機能が低下してしまう。一方、θkを大きくし過ぎると正面輝度が不足したり、光の損失が大きくなってしまう。
透過部43および間部44が並列されるピッチ(図7のp)は、液晶パネルの画素のピッチにより適宜調整することが必要であるが50μm程度である。
図7にaで示した透過部の出光側幅とピッチpとの割合である開口率(a/p)も液晶パネルの画素のピッチにより適宜調整する必要があるが、正面輝度を維持しつつ、視野角を適切に拡大する観点からそのバランスを考慮すると50%程度であることが好ましい。
図7にθmで示した見込み角(一つの間部の出光側の角部と、これに隣り合う他方の間部の入光側の角部とを結ぶ線がシート法線と成す角。)は、25度〜35度であることが好ましい。θmを小さくし過ぎると視野角が狭くなりすぎ、拡大層としての機能が低下してしまう。一方、θmを大きくし過ぎると正面輝度が不足したり、光の損失が大きくなってしまう。
光吸収粒子を用いる場合には、光吸収粒子として、カーボンブラック等の光吸収性の着色粒子が好ましく用いられる。ただし、これらに限定されるものではなく、映像光の特性に合わせて特定の波長を選択的に吸収する着色粒子を使用してもよい。具体的には、カーボンブラック、グラファイト、黒色酸化鉄等の金属塩、染料、顔料等で着色した有機微粒子や着色したガラスビーズ等を挙げることができる。特に、着色した有機微粒子が、コスト面、品質面、入手の容易さ等の観点から好ましく用いられる。より具体的には、カーボンブラックを含有したアクリル架橋微粒子や、カーボンブラックを含有したウレタン架橋微粒子等が好ましく用いられる。こうした着色粒子は、通常、上記の間部を構成する組成物中に3質量%以上30質量%以下の範囲で含まれる。着色粒子の平均粒子径は1.0μm以上20μm以下であることが好ましい。
光吸収粒子を間部に分散させて形成させる方法は、上記した間部を構成する組成物の中に光吸収粒子を分散させ、組成物を硬化させることがよい。
このような間部の断面形状であってもよい。ただし、後述するように視野拡大部材としてこれが入射光に対して視野を拡大することができるように傾斜していることを要する。
条件A:断面三角形形状の頂角以外の角、すなわち、断面三角形形状の基部22上に位置する底角の角度θ1、θ2が、25°以上45°以下である。
条件B:単位光学要素23aの幅Waに対する、単位光学要素23aの高さHaの比(Ha/Wa)が、0.2以上0.5以下である。
また、そのほか、このような視野拡大部材を2枚用い、一方の視野拡大部材の透過部を水平に、他方の視野拡大部材を垂直に配置すれば、上下左右の視野角を拡大することもできる。

Claims (6)
- 光源から出射された光を映像として観察者側に出射させる表示装置であって、
前記観察者側に向けられる出光面、該出光面に対向する裏面、および前記出光面と前記裏面との間の側面を具備する透光性を有する導光板と、
前記導光板の前記側面に光を出射可能に配置された光源と、
前記導光板の前記観察者側に配置された光学シートと、
前記光学シートの前記観察者側に配置された液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルの観察者側に配置された視野を拡大する手段と、を備え、
前記導光板の前記出光面側には、複数の凸状の単位光学要素がシート面に沿って並列され、該単位光学要素は、前記光源が配置された側面からこれに対向する側面側には所定の断面を有して延在し、該延在方向と直交する方向には並列され、
前記光学シートの前記導光板側の面には、複数の凸状の単位プリズムがシート面に沿って並列され、該単位プリズムは、前記単位光学要素が並列される方向には所定の断面を有して延在し、該延在方向と直交する方向には並列され、
前記視野を拡大する手段は、前記液晶パネルの観察者側に配置された視野拡大部材であり、
前記視野拡大部材は、
前記観察者側に短い上底、前記液晶パネル側に長い下底を有する略台形断面を具備し、光透過性を有してシート面に沿って複数並列される透過部と、隣り合う該光透過部間に形成され、前記透過部より小さい屈折率である樹脂が充填された間部と、を備え、前記透過部と前記間部との界面で光を全反射させる光拡大部を有し、前記透過部は前記略台形断面を維持して一方に延在している、
ことを特徴とする表示装置。 - 前記視野拡大部材の延在方向は、前記単位光学要素の延在方向、又は前記単位プリズムの延在方向のいずれかに平行である、ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記視野拡大部材の前記間部は光を吸収可能とされていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の表示装置。
- 前記視野拡大部材の前記透過部の延在方向が垂直方向であることを特徴とする請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置。
- 前記導光板には光散乱剤が分散されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置。
- 前記液晶パネルがTN型であることを特徴とする請求項1〜5のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置。
