Description
まず、図1および図2を参照して、PSA技術を用いた液晶表示装置の構成と動作を説明する。
本発明者は、ネマチック液晶材料がターフェニル環構造(特に説明しない限りパラ体を指す。)を有する液晶性化合物(以下、「ターフェニル系液晶性化合物」という。)を含んでいる場合に光重合性化合物の残存量が低減されることを見出し、本発明に想到した。以下に、実験例を示して本発明を詳細に説明する。なお、特許文献4は、オプショナルな成分としてターフェニル系液晶性化合物を含む誘電異方性が負のネマチック液晶材料を開示しているが、以下の知見については全く開示も示唆もしていない。

Claims (6)
- ネマチック液晶材料を含む液晶層と、
前記液晶層を介して互いに対向する一対の電極と、
前記一対の電極と前記液晶層との間にそれぞれ設けられた一対の配向膜と、
前記一対の配向膜の前記液晶層側の表面のそれぞれに形成された光重合物から構成された配向維持層であって、前記液晶層に電圧を印加していないとき、前記液晶層の液晶分子のプレチルト方向を規定する配向維持層と
を有し、
前記ネマチック液晶材料は、ターフェニル環構造を有する液晶性化合物を必須成分として含み、
前記液晶層は、前記光重合物の原料である光重合性化合物の一部をさらに含み、前記光重合性化合物の前記ネマチック液晶材料に対する含有比率は0.015モル%未満である、液晶表示装置。 - 前記ネマチック液晶材料に含まれる前記ターフェニル環構造を有する液晶性化合物の含有率は、1モル%以上25モル%以下の範囲内にある、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記光重合性化合物は2以上の官能基を有する、請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記光重合性化合物は、液晶骨格を有するジアクリレートモノマーまたは液晶骨格を有するジメタクリレートモノマーを含む、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記一対の配向維持層は粒径が50nm以下の前記光重合物の粒子を含む、請求項1から4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- クロスニコルに配置された一対の偏光板をさらに有する、請求項1から5のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
