Description
図1は,本発明の第1の実施の形態にかかるプラズマ表示装置の概略的な概念図であり,図2は,同プラズマ表示装置において,複数のサブフィールドに分割されたフレーム構造を示す図面である。
本発明の第1の実施の形態では一部行電極のみをアドレシングするために一部Y電極にのみ走査パルスを印加したが,これとは異なり,図3に示したように,全てのY電極に走査パルスを印加することもできる。図3は,本発明の第2の実施の形態によって複数のサブフィールドに分割されたフレーム構造を示す図面である。
第1,2の実施の形態にかかる駆動方法によれば,最小加重値サブフィールドSF1は,実質的に30Hzで駆動されるため,フリッカーを発生させることができる。しかし,30Hzで駆動される場合であっても,輝度が低い場合にはユーザがフリッカーを感じることができない可能性もある。この点,第1,2の実施の形態をサブフィールドSF1の輝度が臨界値以下である場合に適用することもできる。以下,このような場合について図4と図5を参照しながら詳細に説明する。
以上説明したように,本発明の第1〜3の実施の形態によれば,低階調表現力を高めるために,輝度の低いサブフィールドが各フィールドに追加される。これとは異なり,従来のサブフィールドの構成を維持したままで,第1〜3の実施の形態で説明した方法を採用することもできる。次に,この駆動方法を本発明の第4の実施の形態として,図6を参照しながら詳細に説明する。

Claims (12)
- 複数の行電極,前記各行電極に交差する方向に形成される複数の列電極,および前記各行電極と前記各列電極によって定義される複数のセルを含む表示パネルと;
各フィールドを個別の加重値を有する複数のサブフィールドに分割し,映像データから前記行電極と前記列電極の駆動を制御する制御信号を生成し,前記映像データに基づいて画面負荷率を計算し,当該画面負荷率に応じて前記各サブフィールドに割り当てる維持放電パルスの個数を決定する制御部と;
各サブフィールドのアドレス期間において前記複数のセルの中から発光セルを選択し,各サブフィールドの維持期間において前記行電極に対して各サブフィールドの加重値に対応する個数の維持放電パルスを印加して前記発光セルを前記維持放電パルスの個数に対応する期間発光させる駆動部と;
を含み,
前記制御部は,前記複数の加重値のうちの最も小さい加重値を有する第1サブフィールドを含む一のサブフィールドにおいて第1画面負荷率であるときに前記複数の行電極のうちの一部行電極によって定義されるセルを常に非発光セルに設定し,
前記一のサブフィールドの前記第1画面負荷率は,全ての前記維持放電パルスの個数を前記各サブフィールドの加重値に応じて割り当てられた各サブフィールドの維持放電パルスの個数のうちいずれかが“1”より小さいと算出された場合の画面負荷率であり,前記制御部は,当該第1画面負荷率に応じて前記各サブフィールドに割り当てる維持放電パルスの個数に基づいて前記非発光セルを設定することを特徴とする,プラズマ表示装置。 - 前記制御部は,フレーム毎に,異なる行電極を選択して前記非発光セルを設定することを特徴とする,請求項1に記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 前記制御部は,一のフレームにおいて奇数番目行電極によって前記非発光セルを設定し,前記一のフレームの次のフレームにおいて偶数番目行電極によって前記非発光セルを設定することを特徴とする,請求項2に記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドは,前記複数の加重値のうち最も小さい加重値を有する第1サブフィールドと2番目に小さい加重値を有する第2サブフィールドを含み,
前記第1サブフィールドにおいて前記非発光セルを定義する行電極の個数は,前記第2サブフィールドにおいて前記非発光セルを定義する行電極の個数より多いことを特徴とする,請求項2に記載のプラズマ表示装置。 - 前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドは,全ての行電極がアドレシングされたとき,発光輝度が10cd/m2以下となるサブフィールドを含み,
前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドの点滅周期が30Hzであることを特徴とする,請求項1〜4のいずれかに記載のプラズマ表示装置。 - 前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドにおける前記維持放電パルスの個数は,2番目に小さい加重値を有するサブフィールドの維持放電パルスの個数と同一であることを特徴とする,請求項1〜4のいずれかに記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 前記駆動部は,前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドのアドレス期間において,前記一部行電極以外の複数の行電極に対して走査パルスを選択的に印加することを特徴とする,請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 前記駆動部は,前記一部行電極が前記非発光セルを定義する行電極として設定される前記サブフィールドのアドレス期間において,前記複数の行電極に対して走査パルスが選択的に印加され,前記一部行電極に対して前記走査パルスが印加されるとき,前記列電極に対して非発光セルを設定することができるパルスを与えることを特徴とする,請求項1〜4のいずれかに記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 複数の行電極,前記各行電極に交差する方向に形成される複数の列電極,および前記各行電極と前記各列電極によって定義される複数のセルを含む表示パネルと;
各フレームを個別の加重値を有する複数のサブフィールドに分割し,映像データから前記行電極と前記列電極の駆動を制御する制御信号を生成し,前記映像データに基づいて画面負荷率を計算し,当該画面負荷率に応じて前記各サブフィールドに割り当てる維持放電パルスの個数を決定する制御部と;
各サブフィールドにおいて,前記複数の行電極に対して選択的に走査パルスを印加し,前記複数の列電極に対して選択的にアドレスパルスを印加して,前記複数のセルの中から発光セルをアドレシングする駆動部と;

前記制御部は,第1画面負荷率である一のサブフィールドにおいて,アドレシングされる行電極の個数を,前記第1画面負荷率より小さい第2画面負荷率であるときにアドレシングされる行電極の個数より少なく設定し,

- 前記一のサブフィールドにおける画面負荷率が前記第1画面負荷率である場合,第1フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいてアドレシングされる行電極は,前記第1フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドに対応する第2フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいてアドレシングされる行電極と異なることを特徴とする,請求項10に記載のプラズマ表示装置。
- 前記一のサブフィールドにおける画面負荷率が前記第1画面負荷率である場合,第1フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいては,奇数番目行電極がアドレシングされ,前記第1フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドに対応する第2フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいては,偶数番目行電極がアドレシングされ,
前記一のサブフィールドにおける画面負荷率が前記第2画面負荷率である場合,前記第1フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいては全ての行電極がアドレシングされ,前記第2フレームを構成する一のサブフィールドにおいては全ての行電極がアドレシングされることを特徴とする,請求項11に記載のプラズマ表示装置。
