レイパネル(Plasma Display Panel:PDP)の駆動方
法に関する。

表示を行うことのできる駆動方法が望まれている。

インタレース表示では、フレームを複数のフィールドに
分けてこれらフィールドを順に表示する。一般にフィー
ルド数は2である。この場合、一方のフィールドの表示
には奇数番目の表示ラインを用い、他方のフィールドの
表示には偶数番目の表示ラインを用いる。つまり、1本
置きの表示ラインを用いて1フィールドを表示する。フ
ィールドが多いほど、1フィールドで用いる表示ライン
は少ない。一方、プログレッシブ表示では、表示面を構
成するN本の表示ラインのすべてを用い、それぞれに対
して個別に表示内容を設定する。

は基本的には2値発光素子であるので、画素ごとに明る
さの異なる画像を1回のアドレッシングで表示すること
はできない。このため、インタレース表示においては、
1フィールドを複数のサブフィールドに分割し、サブフ
ィールドごとにアドレッシングおよびサステインを行
う。例えば、サブフィールド分割数Kを8とし、計8回
のサステインについて輝度重み(つまり発光量)の比を
1:2:4:8:16:32:64とする。セルを点灯
させるサブフィールドを選択することにより、階調レベ
ルが「0」〜「255」の256階調の表示が可能であ
る。NTSC方式のテレビジョン画像および一般のコン
ピュータ出力といったフレームレートが30の画像の表
示において、1フィールド分の駆動期間(1/60秒)
にアドレッシングおよびサステインをK回行う。プログ
レッシブ表示においても同様の手法によって階調再現が
行われる。なお、カラー表示は階調表示の一種であっ
て、表示色はR,G,Bの3色の階調の組み合せによっ
て決まる。
スしたフレームをインタレース表示するのはもちろんの
こと、プログレッシブ表示するのもデジタル信号処理技
術によれば可能である。フレームをメモリに書き込んで
必要部分を読み出せばよい。コンピュータ出力のような
ノンインタレース(プログレッシブ)のフレームをイン
タレース表示することも可能である。PDPにおいてプ
ログレッシブ表示とインタレース表示のどちらを行うか
は駆動回路の設計における選択事項である。実効解像度
(肉眼で知覚される鮮明さ)の点ではプログレッシブ表
示が有利であるが、インタレース表示を採用する場合も
ある。例えば、2本の表示ラインに対し3本の割合で表
示電極を等間隔に配列する高精細型のPDPでは、プロ
グレッシブ表示よりも駆動シーケンスが簡単であるとい
う理由でインタレース表示が行われている。また、駆動
回路に入力されるフレームがインタレース形式の場合、
信号処理が簡単なのはインタレース表示である。
次の問題がある。(1)実効解像度が低い。上述の高精
細型PDPの場合、プログレッシブ表示の70%程度で
ある。(2)サステインの駆動周波数を高めて画面を明る
くする必要があり、駆動周波数を高めることでセルの静
電容量の充電による電力損失が大きくなる。(3)静止
画の表示においてフリッカ(ちらつき)が目立つ。これ
ら問題を解決するため、フレームをインタレース表示に
おけるサブフィールド数と同数のサブフレームに分割し
てプログレッシブ形式で表示すると、アドレッシングの
所要時間が2倍に長くなる分だけサステインに割り当て
可能な時間が短くなる。特に、XGA(eXtended Graphi
cs Array)およびXGAより上位の高解像度仕様のPD
Pにおいては、すべての表示ラインを用いることからサ
ステインにおける1パルスあたりの表示面全体の平均輝
度がインタレース表示と比べて高いにもかかわらず、サ
ステイン期間に印加できるパルスが僅かで放電回数が少
ないことから、実際には表示面全体の平均輝度は下が
る。

表示の輝度を高めることである。
ールドを輝度の重み付けをした複数のサブフィールドで
構成し、輝度の重みの大きい順に選んだ1以上のサブフ
ィールドについては、すべての表示ラインを用いるプロ
グレッシブ形式の表示を行い、他のサブフィールドにつ
いては、配列順に一定の割合で間引いた残りの表示ライ
ンのみを用いるインタレース形式の表示を行う。プログ
レッシブ形式ではサブフィールドで点灯する表示ライン
の数が単純に計算するとインタレース形式の場合の2倍
になる。また、すべての表示ラインの表示内容を表示デ
ータに応じて独立に設定するので、実効解像度は表示ラ
イン数そのものとなる。輝度の重みの大きいサブフィー
ルドにプログレッシブ形式を適用するので、重みの小さ
いサブフィールドに適用する場合よりもフィールド全体
でみた輝度および実効解像度の改善効果は大きい。ただ
し、必ずしもプログレッシブ形式を適用するサブフィー
ルドが多いほど輝度が高いとは限らない。それは、プロ
グレッシブ形式はインタレース形式よりもアドレッシン
グに長い時間を要するので、プログレッシブ形式を適用
するサブフィールドが多いほどサステインに割り当て可
能な時間が短いからである。アドレッシングの所要時間
は表示ライン数に依存するので、本発明の適用に際して
は、適用対象のプラズマディスプレイパネルの表示ライ
ン数に応じて、改善効果が最も大きくなるようにプログ
レッシブ表示をするサブフィールドの数を決めるのが好
ましい。
形態に係るプラズマ表示装置の構成図である。表示装置
100は、m×n個のセルからなる表示面をもつ3電極
面放電形式のAC型PDP1と、セルを選択的に発光さ
せるためのドライブユニット70とから構成されてお
り、壁掛け式テレビジョン受像機、コンピュータシステ
ムのモニターなどとして利用される。
制御回路71、電源回路73、Xドライバ74、Yドラ
イバ77、およびアドレスドライバ80を有している。
制御回路71は、コントローラ711およびデータ変換
回路712からなる。コントローラ711は、駆動電圧
の制御データを記憶する波形メモリを備えている。Xド
ライバ74は、表示電極Xに対して1本置きに異なる電
位にバイアスすることが可能に構成されている。これに
よってアドレッシングにおいて各表示電極Yの上側のセ
ルと下側のセルとを別々に選択することができる。Yド
ライバ77はスキャン回路78と共通ドライバ79とか
らなる。スキャン回路78はアドレッシングにおける表
示ライン選択のための電位切換え手段であり、表示電極
Yの電位を個別に制御する。共通ドライバ79は表示電
極Yの電位を一括に切り換える。アドレスドライバ80
は、サブフレームデータDsfに基づいて、計m本のア
ドレス電極Aの電位を切り換える。これらドライバには
電源回路73から所定の電力が供給される。
コンピュータなどの外部装置からR,G,Bの3色の輝
度レベルを示す多値画像データであるフレームデータD
fが、同期信号CLOCK,VSYNC,HSYNCと
ともに入力される。フレームデータDfは、データ変換
回路712内のフレームメモリに一旦格納された後、階
調表示のためのサブフィールドデータDsfに変換され
てアドレスドライバ80へ転送される。サブフィールド
データDsfのビット値は、該当する1つのサブフィー
ルドにおけるセルの発光 (点灯ともいう)の要否、厳密
にはアドレス放電の要否を示す。
トリクスの模式図である。駆動対象のPDP1は、図2
のように2本の表示ラインに対して3本の割合で表示電
極Xおよび表示電極Yを交互にかつ等間隔に配列した高
精細型である。各表示電極Yとその隣の表示電極Xとが
面放電を生じさせる電極対を構成し、この電極対が1本
の表示ラインの制御に用いられる。なお、表示ラインと
は、表示電極Yに沿ったセル列、すなわち表示面61の
全長にわたる1セル幅の水平線を表示する場合に点灯さ
せるセルの集合である。図では代表として先頭の表示ラ
イン(1)のみについてセル51を楕円で示してある。
表示面61の仕様は表示ライン数Nが768のXGAで
あり、表示電極Xおよび表示電極Yの合計本数は769
(=N+1)である。表示電極Xと表示電極Yとが平行
なので、各セル51を選択するために表示面61にはア
ドレス電極Aが水平方向に等間隔に配列されている。

表示電極Yは透明導電膜41と金属膜42とからなる。
透明導電膜41は、放電電流を小さくして発光効率を高
めるため、電極面積を小さくする空隙を有した形状にパ
ターニングされている。透明導電膜41はセル51を囲
むメッシュパターンの隔壁29における水平方向の部分
(以下、水平壁という)の両側に張り出し、隣り合う透
明導電膜41とともにセルごとに面放電ギャップを形成
する。金属膜42は導電性を高めるバス導体であり、水
平壁と重なるように配置されている。

にセル構成要素を設けた構造体)10,20からなる。
前面側の基板構体10の基材であるガラス基板11の内
面に、表示ラインピッチと同じピッチで表示電極X,Y
が配列されている。表示電極X,Yを被覆するように誘
電体層17が設けられ、誘電体層17の表面には保護膜
18としてマグネシア(MgO)が被着されている。背
面側の基板構体20の基材であるガラス基板21の内面
には1列に1本ずつアドレス電極Aが配列されており、
これらアドレス電極Aは誘電体層24で被覆されてい
る。誘電体層24の上に高さ150μm程度の隔壁29
が設けられている。隔壁29は、放電空間を列ごとに区
画する部分(以下、垂直壁という)291と、放電空間
を表示ラインごとに区画する部分(上述の水平壁)29
2とからなる。そして、誘電体層24の表面および隔壁
29の側面を被覆するように、カラー表示のためのR,
G,Bの3色の蛍光体層28R,28G,28Bが設け
られている。色配列は各列のセルを同色とするR,G,
Bの繰り返しパターンである。蛍光体層28R,28
G,28Bは面放電時に放電ガスが放つ紫外線によって
励起されて発光する。隔壁パターンがメッシュパターン
であるので、水平壁292を省略するストライプパター
ンとは違って、列方向の放電干渉が生じない。つまり、
PDP1では複雑な駆動シーケンスによらずにプログレ
ッシブ表示を実現することができる。また、水平壁29
2の側面にも蛍光体を設けることにより発光効率が高ま
る。
5は駆動シーケンスにおける期間設定を示す図である。
本例の表示対象であるフレームは2対1インタレース形
式である。図5(A)のように、1フレームに割り当て
るフレーム期間は第1フィールド期間と第2フィールド
期間に2分割される。階調表示を行うため、各フィール
ドは輝度の重み付けをした10個のサブフィールドSF
1,SF2,SF3,SF4,SF5,SF6,SF
7,SF8,SF9,SF10に分割され、これらサブ
フィールドSF1〜SF10に対して図5(B)のよう
にフィールド期間を分割した期間が配分される。サブフ
ィールドSF1〜SF10の輝度重みW1は順に、4
8,48,32,32,16,16,8,4,2,1で
あり、208階調の表示が可能である。図において輝度
重みW1とともに示された重みW2は、表示放電の回数
の重み(これを放電回数重みという)である。輝度重み
W1と放電回数重みW2との関係については後述する。
なお、図では輝度重みW1の大きい順にサブフィールド
SF1〜SF10が配置されているが、表示順序(いわ
ゆる重み配列)はこれに限らない。例えば、発光時間中
心が階調によって大きく変化しないように重み配列を選
定することは動偽輪郭を低減する手法として公知であ
る。
れに配分される期間は、リセット期間、アドレス期間、
およびサステイン期間(表示期間ともいう)から構成さ
れる。リセット期間は、表示面内の全てのセルについて
帯電状態を均一化する壁電荷の初期化を行う期間であ
る。リセット期間の長さは全てのサブフィールドSF1
〜SF10の間で等しい。アドレス期間は、サステイン
で点灯すべきセルのみに表示放電に必要な壁電圧を生じ
させるアドレッシングのための期間である。アドレッシ
ング操作としては、表示に用いる表示ラインに対応した
表示電極Yに順にスキャンパルスを印加するスキャンニ
ングを行い、これと同期させて表示ラインごとのタイミ
ングで全てのアドレス電極Aを表示データに応じた電位
に制御する。スキャンパルスが印加され、かつアドレス
電極Aが所定アドレス電位にバイアスされたセルのみで
壁電圧を変化させるアドレス放電が生じる。アドレス期
間の長さは表示に用いる表示ラインの数に比例する。サ
ステイン期間は、サブフィールドの輝度重みW1に応じ
た回数の表示放電を生じさせる期間である。全てのセル
に放電開始電圧より低い振幅のサステインパルスを印加
する。より具体的には、表示電極Yと表示電極Xとを交
互にサステイン電位にバイアスし、それによって表示電
極間に交流電圧を加える。サステインパルスの電圧に所
定の壁電圧が重畳するセル(上述の点灯すべきセル)の
みで表示放電が生じる。放電によって壁電圧の極性は反
転し、次のサステインパルス印加で再び表示放電が生じ
る。この動作が繰り返されることによって、輝度重みW
1に応じた量(積分発光量)の光が蛍光体から放たれ
る。サステイン期間の長さは放電回数重みW2に比例す
る。

輝度重みW1の大きい順に選択した4個のサブフィール
ドSF1〜SF4については全ての表示ラインを用いる
プログレッシブ形式の表示を行い、残り6個のサブフィ
ールドSF5〜SF10については1本置きの表示ライ
ンを用いるインタレース形式の表示を行うことである。
第1フィールドのサブフィールドSF5〜SF10では
奇数番目の表示ラインを用い、第2フィールドのサブフ
ィールドSF5〜SF10では偶数番目の表示ラインを
用いる。プログレッシブ形式のサブフィールドSF1〜
SF4では、インタレース形式のサブフィールドSF5
〜SF10と比べて、アドレッシングには2倍の時間を
要するものの、表示面全体の平均輝度は2倍でありかつ
実効解像度が大きい(表示ライン数に等しい)。したが
って、フィールド全体としてみてもプログレッシブ形式
の適用によって輝度が高まりかつ実効解像度が増大す
る。
いては放電回数重みW2が大きいほど長く設定されてい
る。これは、フィールドにプログレッシブ表示とインタ
レース表示とが混在するフィールドにおいて正しく階調
再現をするための工夫である。インタレース表示のみの
従来法と同様にサステイン期間を輝度重みW1に比例さ
せると、階調の連続性が得られない。それは輝度重みW
1が同じであってもプログレッシブ表示の平均輝度はイ
ンタレース表示の平均輝度の2倍だからである。したが
って、インタレース表示のサブフィールドSF5〜SF
10のサステイン期間を2倍に延長し、表示放電回数を
2倍に増やして平均輝度を高めることでプログレッシブ
表示との整合をとることができる。

は、10個のサブフィールドのうちプログレッシブ表示
を行うサブフィールドの数とフィールド全体の輝度との
関係を示す。輝度(縦軸)は全てのセルを1回放電させ
たときの輝度を基準としてサステイン周波数に換算して
表されている。三角のプロットは、全ての表示ラインの
セルを可能な限り最も多く放電させたときの輝度、すな
わちサステインに割り当て可能な時間を表す。プログレ
ッシブ表示のアドレッシングは長いので、プログレッシ
ブ表示のサブフィールドが少ないほどサステインに割り
当て可能な時間は長い。黒丸のプロットは、プログレッ
シブ表示のサブフィールドでは全ての表示ラインを点灯
させ、インタレース表示のサブフィールドでは1本置き
の表示ラインのみを点灯させたときの輝度(これを実効
サステイン周波数という)を表す。実効サステイン周波
数が本発明を適用した駆動制御における実際の輝度の指
標となる。

ブフィールドのいくつかをプログレッシブ表示にして、
残りのサブフィールドをインタレース表示することによ
り、輝度の極大が得られることが分かった。この極大輝
度は完全なインタレース表示(プログレッシブ表示のサ
ブフィールドの数が0の場合)で得られる輝度よりも高
い。図5はXGA仕様の場合において4個のサブフィー
ルドSF1〜SF4でプログレッシブ表示を行うと最大
の輝度が得られることを示している。図5の重み付けで
は、4個のサブフィールドSF1〜SF4でプログレッ
シブ表示を行う場合の実効解像度は716である。ここ
で、実効解像度は、プログレッシブ表示のサブフィール
ドでは表示ライン数分の解像度があるとし、インタレー
ス表示のサブフィールドでは表示ライン数の0.7倍の
解像度があるとして、サブフィールドごとの輝度の重み
付け平均を計算した値と定義される。なお、4個のサブ
フィールドSF1〜SF4でプログレッシブ表示を行う
場合には、サステイン周波数が完全なインタレース表示
の場合と比べて30%低いので、サステイン放電回路に
おけるロスを防いで駆動モジュールの動作効率を高める
ことができる。

のように1本の表示ラインに対して2本の割合で表示電
極Xbおよび表示電極Ybを配列した一般型である。各
表示電極Xbとそれに近接配置された表示電極Ybとが
面放電を生じさせる電極対を構成し、この電極対が1本
の表示ラインの制御に用いられる。なお、隣り合う表示
ライン間の電極間隙は面放電ギャップよりも十分に大き
い値に選定され、これによって表示ライン間の放電干渉
が防止されている。この場合も、表示ラインとは、表示
電極Yに沿ったセル列、すなわち表示面62の全長にわ
たる1セル幅の水平線を表示する場合に点灯させるセル
の集合である。図では代表として表示ライン(1)のみ
についてセル52を楕円で示してある。表示面62の仕
様は表示ライン数Nが480のVGAであり、表示電極
Xbおよび表示電極Ybの合計本数は960(=2N)
である。PDP2においても表示電極Xbと表示電極Y
bとが平行なので、各セル52を選択するために表示面
62にはアドレス電極Aが水平方向に等間隔に配列され
ている。

配置されている。

の輝度との関係を示す。VGA仕様においても、輝度重
みW1が大きい側のサブフィールドのいくつかをプログ
レッシブ表示にして、残りのサブフィールドをインタレ
ース表示することにより、輝度の極大が得られる。この
極大輝度は完全なインタレース表示(プログレッシブ表
示のサブフィールドの数が0の場合)で得られる輝度よ
りも高い。図9は図5と同様の重み付けにおける重みの
大きい6個のサブフィールドSF1〜SF6でプログレ
ッシブ表示を行うと最大の輝度が得られることを示して
いる。6個のサブフィールドSF1〜SF6でプログレ
ッシブ表示を行うときの実効解像度は470である。以
上は表示に用いる表示ラインに属するセルを全て点灯さ
せる場合の説明であるが、実際の表示では内容が表示デ
ータに依存するので、必ずしも全てのセルを一様に点灯
させるとは限らない。つまり、表示負荷は変動する。表
示負荷とは、1フィールドにおける任意のセルiの階調
値をDi(0≦Di≦Dmax)としたときの比率Di
/Dmaxの全セルにわたる平均値として定義される。
表示負荷が重いときにサステイン周波数(ここではパル
ス印加数)を下げて電力消費を一定値以下に制限する公
知の自動電力制御(Auto Power Control:APC)を行
う場合には、サステイン周波数が設定値以下のときにプ
ログレッシブ表示のサブフィールドを6個より増やすこ
とで、実効解像度をさらに高めることができる。本実施
例では表示負荷が50%以上では完全なプログレッシブ
表示となる。

- 【請求項1】フレームを構成する2以上のM個のフィー
ルドのそれぞれを、輝度の重み付けをした2以上のK個
のサブフィールドに分割し、 前記K個のサブフィールドのうち、重みの大きい順に選
択したk(1≦k<K)個のサブフィールドについては
全ての表示ラインを用いるプログレッシブ形式の表示を
行い、残りのサブフィールドについては配列順にM本に
1本の割合で選んだ(M−1)本置きの表示ラインのみ
を用いるインタレース形式の表示を行うことを特徴とす
