Abstract
【解決手段】反射電極を有する下部基板と、下部基板上に形成する配向膜と、下部基板と対向配置してカラーフィルターを有する上部基板と、上部基板上に形成する配向膜と、下部基板と上部基板との間に配置した液晶層と、上部基板の外側面上に取り付けて線偏光を円偏光に変換する位相補償フィルムと、位相補償フィルム上に取り付けて、入射した自然光を、線偏光に変換する偏光板を含み、下部配向膜の配向角度は水平ラインに対して−10〜20゜であり、上部配向膜の配向角度は、水平ラインに対して40〜55゜であり、液晶層の位相遅延値(dΔn)は0.24〜0.27μmであり、位相補償フィルムはλ/4の位相補償機能を有し、かつその光軸が水平ラインに対して140〜146゜であり、偏光板の吸収軸は水平ラインに対して102〜122.5゜とする。

Description
ECB型の液晶表示装置は、液晶セルの複屈折率変化を通じて光透過率の変化を誘導した方式であり、その代表的な例としてHAN(Hybrid−Aligned Nematic)モード液晶表示装置を挙げることができる。前記HANモード液晶表示装置は、比較的低い電圧で動作して、その応答速度が速い利点を有するために、その研究が活発に進められている。
図1は従来の反射型液晶表示装置を概略的に図示した断面図である。
従来の反射型液晶表示装置は、図1に示すように、反射電極2及び下部配向膜3を具備した下部基板1と、カラーフィルター5及び上部配向膜6を具備した上部基板4の間に液晶層10を構成し、前記上部基板4の外側面上に位相補償フィルム、例えば、λ/4フィルム7と偏光板8を順に取り付けた構造を有する。前記反射電極2は、リソグラフィまたはホログラフィ工程などを通じて表面に凹凸を有する。
このように反射電極で反射された線偏光の光は、再び液晶層を通過しながら左円偏光に変わった後、位相補償フィルムを通過して、偏光方向が偏光板の偏光軸に平行な線偏光に変形され、偏光板を通過し、ホワイト(white)の状態を具現する。
反射型液晶表示装置での効率的な反射率増大のためには、偏光板の吸収軸または透過軸角度、位相補償フィルムの光学特性、液晶層の厚さ(d)、液晶層の位相遅延値(dΔn)、液晶のツイスト角、配向膜の配向角度、及び反射板の特性などの値を最適化することが必要である。
この時、液晶のツイスト角及び液晶層の位相遅延値は、各々63〜80゜及び0.20〜0.27μm程度で調節する。
また、本発明の他の目的は、充分なセルギャップを確保することで、製造工程での歩留まりが良い、液晶表示装置を提供することである。
本発明は、液晶セルの設計を最適化させることによって、電圧による反射率を高めることができ、これにより、コントラスト比及び色特性を高めることができて、優秀な表示画面の液晶表示装置を提供できる。
(1)液晶層はツイスト角が60゜であるTN液晶で構成する。前記液晶層の位相遅延値が0.24〜0.27μmである時、セルギャップマージンが高くて、コントラスト比及び色特性が優秀な液晶表示装置を得ることができる。
この時、最適のセルを構成することができる下部配向膜の配向角度は水平ラインに対して−10〜−20゜であり、上部配向膜の配向角度は水平ラインに対して40〜55゜であり、λ/4フィルムの光軸は140〜146゜であり、偏光板の吸収軸は102〜122.5゜である。
また、本発明の液晶表示装置は概略3.6〜4.0μm程度のセルギャップを有するようになる。これにより従来の液晶表示装置では2.9〜3.5μm程度のセルギャップであるが、これと比較して本発明は、工程マージンを改善することができる。
液晶層は電界印加の可否により透過光の位相を変換するHANモードの液晶層である。
このようなHANモード液晶層はツイスト角が90゜であるツイストネマティック液晶で構成する。
前記HANモード液晶層の位相遅延値(dΔn)は0.36〜0.40μmとし、偏光板の透過軸は42〜48゜とし、位相補償フィルムのλ/4フィルムの光軸は167〜173゜とする。
図13に示すように、反射電極31を具備した下部基板30と、カラーフィルター34を具備した上部基板33との間に液晶層37を配置する。前記反射電極31上には下部配向膜32を形成する。前記下部配向膜32は単位画素を二分して、第1領域では垂直または水平配向処理し、第2領域では第1領域とは反対の水平または垂直配向処理をする。前記カラーフィルター33上には、上部配向膜35を形成する。前記上部配向膜35は、下部配向膜32とは反対に、第1領域では水平または垂直配向処理し、第2領域では第1領域とは反対に垂直または水平配向処理をする。
この時、前記λ/4フィルムは、0.14〜0.15μmの位相補償遅延値を有し、水平ラインに対して167〜173゜の光軸を有する。前記偏光板は42〜48゜の透過軸を有する。
図14に示すように、単位画素は反射領域と透過領域に区分される。反射領域に該当する下部基板40部分の上には反射電極41を形成する。前記下部基板40と対向してカラーフィルター44を具備した上部基板43を配置する。
この時、前記λ/4フィルムは0.14〜0.15μmの位相補償遅延値を有し、水平ラインに対して167〜173゜の光軸を有する。前記偏光板は42〜48゜の透過軸を有する。
一方、図示したように、反射領域の液晶層の厚さをdとすると、透過領域はセルギャップをd×2に設計し、反射領域と透過領域とが同じ位相遅延値(dΔn)を有する。

- 反射電極を具備した下部基板と、
該下部基板上に形成する下部配向膜と、
前記下部基板と対向配置してカラーフィルターを具備した上部基板と、
該上部基板上に形成する上部配向膜と、
前記下部基板と上部基板との間に配置した液晶層と、
前記上部基板の外側面上に取り付けて線偏光を円偏光に変換する位相補償フィルムと、
前記位相補償フィルム上に取り付けて外部から入射した自然光を線偏光に変換する偏光板とを有し、
前記下部配向膜の配向角度は水平ラインに対して0〜10゜であり、
前記上部配向膜の配向角度は水平ラインに対して50〜56゜であり、
前記液晶層の位相遅延値(dΔn)は0.17〜0.21μmであり、
