Abstract
【解決手段】 有機ELアクティブマトリクス型表示装置1において、周囲環境の明るさを検出する照度検出部9と、この照度検出部9の出力に対応する輝度設定値を演算する演算部8と、この演算部8にて演算された輝度設定値で有機EL素子13の発光時間を制御する制御手段としてデューティ走査駆動回路5を設置する。有機EL素子13の発光時間は、一走査サイクルにおける発光時間の割合(デューティ)で制御することができ、このデューティの制御によって、表示輝度の調整を簡便かつ容易に行うことができる。また、ダイナミックレンジの低下を伴わないので、暗い場所でも高画質を維持できる。

Claims (10)
- 所定の走査サイクルで画素を選択する走査線と、画素を駆動するための輝度情報を与えるデータ線と、前記輝度情報に基づいて電流量を制御して発光素子を発光させる画素回路とが、マトリクス状に配置されてなるアクティブマトリクス型表示装置において、
周囲環境の照度を検出する照度検出手段と、
前記照度検出手段の出力に応じて前記発光素子の発光時間を制御する制御手段とを備えた
ことを特徴とするアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記制御手段は、目的とする画面コントラストを満足させる表示輝度が得られるように前記発光素子の発光時間を制御する
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記表示輝度には、最大値と最小値とが設定されている
ことを特徴とする請求項2に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記画素回路は、前記走査線によって制御され且つ前記データ線から与えられた前記輝度情報を画素に書き込む書込走査用能動素子と、この書き込まれた輝度情報に応じて前記発光素子に供給する電流量を制御する駆動用能動素子と、前記輝度情報を保持する保持容量と、点灯状態にある前記発光素子を消灯状態にする消灯用能動素子とを有し、
前記制御手段は、前記書込走査用能動素子または前記消灯用能動素子の駆動タイミングを制御して、前記発光素子の発光時間を制御する
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記画素回路は、前記輝度情報の書込みを前記データ線の電圧制御で行う電圧書込み型画素回路である
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記画素回路は、前記輝度情報の書込みを前記データ線の電流制御で行う電流書込み型画素回路である
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 前記発光素子は、有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子である
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置。 - 所定の走査サイクルで画素を選択する走査線と、画素を駆動するための輝度情報を与えるデータ線と、前記輝度情報に基づいて電流量を制御し発光素子を発光させる画素回路とがマトリクス状に配置され、走査駆動手段による前記走査線の選択走査とデータ駆動手段による前記データ線を介しての選択駆動とに基づいて、前記発光素子の発光動作を行うアクティブマトリクス型表示装置の駆動方法において、
周囲環境の照度を検出するステップと、
前記検出された照度に応じて前記発光素子の発光時間を演算するステップと、
前記演算された発光時間に応じて前記走査駆動手段を制御するステップとを有する
ことを特徴とするアクティブマトリクス型表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記発光素子の発光時間を演算するステップでは、少なくとも、目的とする画面コントラストを満足させる表示輝度が得られる前記発光素子の発光時間を演算する
ことを特徴とする請求項8に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記表示輝度には、最大値と最小値とを設定する
ことを特徴とする請求項9に記載のアクティブマトリクス型表示装置の駆動方法。
