Abstract

1408833 Sintered magnesia containing zircon OSTERREICHISCH - AMERIKANISCHE MAGNESIT AG 4 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 21320/73 Heading C1A Production of sintered magnesia from magnesium compounds yielding perclase on firing, particularly from raw magnesite, or from caustic magnesia, wherein the magnesium compounds are mixed with zircon (ZrO 2 .SiO 2 ) in an amount of 0À2 to 3À6%, preferably 0À4 to 2À4%, based on the MgO content of the resulting sintered magnesia. The zircon has a particle size of at most 0À2 mm, and at least 90% of the zircon having a particle size below 0À075 mm. In an example the starting material consisted of a raw magnesite, all particles of which were below 0À12 mm., and 94À8% of which had a particle size below 0À075 mm. Zircon, 1À2% ZrO 2 SiO 2 was added and the resultant mixture together with spent sulphite cellulose liquor as a binder, was compacted to form briquettes, which were then sintered at about 1850‹ C. The resultant product had a particle specific gravity of 3À4 and an open pore volume of 2À13%. [GB1408833A]

Claims (6)

What we claim is:
1. . A process of producing sintered magnesia from magnesiu compounds yielding periclase on firing, particularly from raw magnesite, or from caustic magnesia, wherein the magnesium comp or the caustic magnesia is mixed with zircon in an amount of 0.2 to 3.6 %, preferably 0. to 2. , based on the content said zircon having particle size of at most 0.2 mm, and at least 9 % of the zirco having a particle size below 0.075 mm, and. the resulting mixtur is briquetted and sintered.
2. A process according to claim 1 , wherein raw magnesite used as magnesium compound and zircon is used in an amount of 0 to 1 .8 %, preferably 0.4 to 1 .2 .
3. A process according to claim 1 or 2 , wherein the magne compounds or the caustic magnesia are used in a particle size o at most mm and with at least 15 % of these particles being smaller than 0.0 5 mm.
4. A process according to claim 3 , wherein at least 80 % the magnesium compounds or of the caustic magnesia are used in particle size below 0. 1 mm.
5. · A process according to any of claims to 4, wherein t corrected lime-silica weight ratio in the mixture to be sintere is adjusted to a value of 1 .7 to 2. 2 , preferabl 1 .85 to 2.0.
6. A process of producing sintered magnesia by sintering mixture of magnesium compounds yielding periclase or of caustic magnesia and zircon substantiall as hereinbefore described. 7 · A sintered magnesia produced by a process claimed in any preceding claim.
