Abstract

1464923 Refractory compositions DIDIERWERKE AG 29 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 18685/74 Heading C1J A composition for the production of burnt refractory shapes comprises a particulate mixture of from 10-50 wt. per cent zirconia (grain size less than 0À1 mm.) and from 50-90 wt. per cent zirconium silicate (grain size not less than 0À2 mm.), from 30-60% of the zirconia being in stabilized form, 70-40% being in non- stabilized form. The burnt refractory shape may be made by forming a slip of the composition, forming the slip into the desired shape and burning. The slip may be prepared in a wet mill lined with zirconia shapes and containing zirconia grinding bodies. Preparation may be by first dispersing the zirconia in water (e.g. with the aid of an alkali metal.salt of a polycarboxylic acid) and then adding the zirconium silicate. Alternatively, the burnt shape may be made by pressing in the presence of an organic binding agent a mass of the composition and burning.
