Images are produced by photographic exposure and thermal development and fixing of photographically sensitive multilayer material comprising a support bearing in separate contiguous layers a developer, a fixing agent and a silver halide emulsion together with, in at least the developer or emulsion layer, one or more chemical substances having a melting point below that of the emulsion, which substance or substances is or are melted by heating with release of water. Typically a support is coated successively with a fixer layer including anhydrous sodium thiosulphate and potassium metabisulphite and sodium acetate crystals, a developer layer including 1 -phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, hydroquinone, anhydrous sodium sulphite, sodium carbonate and potassium bromide and sodium sulphate crystals, and a silver chloride emulsion containing sodium acetate crystals. The order of mixing the components for each coating material is specified. The binder in each layer is gelatin but reference is made to the use of polyvinyl alcohol containing glycerin. To adjust diffusion rates, the gelatin in the different layers may be hardened to different extents.
