Abstract

958,963. Photothermographic materials. KODAK Ltd. June 1, 1960 [June 3, 1959], No. 6856/64. Divided out of 958,962. Heading G2C. A photothermographic material comprises a layer containing a silver halide emulsion and a heat-sensitive material which does not absorb infra-red radiation and undergoes a visible change or becomes capable of causing a visible change when heated to over 55‹C. The material is exposed to light, developed to give a silver image, and then exposed to infra-red radiation as described in Specification 866,777. The heat-sensitive material may be one of those disclosed in the above Specification or it may be a mixture of a p-quinone and a dihydroxybenzene as claimed in Specification 927,895. Alternatively, it may comprise a mixture of lead formate and mercuric oxalate, a mixture of thiourea and nickel acetate, or a mixture of mercurous chloride and urea. In Example 2, the support is first coated with an aqueous gelatine composition containing hydroquinone, metol, sodium sulphite, sodium carbonate and potassium bromide before being coated with the photothermographic layer, while in Example 4 the support is first coated with an aqueous gelatine solution containing inter alia 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone,ascorbic acid, sucrose and potassium metaborate. In either case, development is in moist air at 60‹C. before the infra-red exposure. The support may be coated on both sides with the photothermographic layer. The layer may be coated to give a silver coverage of 1 mole of silver per 140,000 or 2, 500 sq. feet.
