Abstract

1328912 Photographic diffusion transfer process EASTMAN KODAK CO 6 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 13442/71 Heading G2C A photographic dye image is produced by imagewise exposing a photo-sensitive element comprising a support and at least one photo-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, each silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a dye image-providing mnterial, treating the photo-sensitive element with an alkaline processing liquid thereby effecting development of each exposed silver halide emulsion layer, forming an imagewise distribution of diffusible dye imageproviding material and allowing at least a portion of each imagewise distribution of diffusible dye image-providing material to diffuse to a dye image-receiving layer, said development being effected in the presence of a 5-pyrazolone unsubstituted in the 4- position and at least one onium compound which is a quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium or tertiary sulphonium compound, The onium compound may be 1- phenethylpyridinium bromide, 1-ethyl-pyridinium bromide, 1-phenethyl -3-picolinium bromide, 1-n-nonylpyridinium p-toluenesulphonate, tetraethylammonium bromide, N, N-diethylpiperidinium bromide, lauryldimethylsulphonium p-toluenesulphonate, nonyldimethylsulphonium p-toluenesulphonate, butyldimethylsulphonium bromide, triethylsulphonium bromide, or tetraethylphosphonium bromide. The 5-pyrazolone is preferably 1-phenyl-3-methyl -5-pyrazolone, 1-p-nitrophenyl -3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, 1-α-naphthyl- -3-methyl -5-pyrazolone, 1-p-bromophenyl- 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, 1-phenyl-3- ethoxy-5-pyrazolone, 1-phenyl-3-butoxy-5- pyrazolone, 1-p-nitrophenyl-3-ethoxy-5-pyrazolone, 1-(p-suphamylphenyl)-3-ethoxy -5 -pyrazolone, 1-phenyl-3-acetylamino-5-pyrazolone or 1-phenyl-3-propionylamino -5-pyrazolone. The onium compound and the 5-pyrazolone may be in either or in two or in all of the alkaline processing liquid, the dye image-receiving material comprising the dye image-receiving layer, and the photo-sensitive element. The image-receiving layer may be on a separate support or integral with the photo-sensitive element. A rupturable container containing alkaline processing liquid, may be present. The photo-sensitive element may contain an auxiliary developing agent. Improved colour separation is obtained using this process. The invention also comprises an alkaline processing liquid containing a 5-pyrazolone unsubstituted in the 4-position and quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium or tertiary sulphonium compound.
