Heading DID [Also in Division G3] A variable speed electric motor 3, driving a yarn package spindle 2, is used to maintain the circumferential speed of the yarn package 1 constant, the control means comprising a freely rotatable drum 10 in contact with the circumference of the package and a tachogenerator 11 within and driven by the drum 10, the tachogenerator generating a signal that controls, via an amplifier 13, the speed of the motor 3. The apparatus includes a traverse mechanism 8 coupled in constant speed ratio to the spindle 2. In the embodiment illustrated the motor 3 is a separately excited D.C. motor and the tachogenerator is A.C. The alternating current output of the tachogenerator 11 is fed to an amplifying and control device 13 where it is rectified and varied such that the resulting D.C. output voltage decreases as the frequency of the signal generated by the tachogenerator becomes higher. This D.C. voltage is supplied to the armature of the separately excited motor 3 and, as a result, the speed of the motor 3 decreases if the speed of the drum 10 increases and conversely. In a further embodiment the tachogenerator generates a D.C. voltage and this voltage is used to control the motor 3 by way of an amplifier system such that its speed is varied inversely according to the voltage intensity applied. In a further embodiment the motor 3 is an A.C. synchronous motor suitably controlled by a tachogenerator having an A.C. output.
