Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a method of winding a filament under controlled tension the filament 21 is associated with the shaft 26 of an electric motor and the rotating mandrel 27 on to which the filament is wound, is rotated in such a way that the output shaft 26 is rotated in a direction opposite to the direction in which it is urged by its energizing current, the tension in the filament being controlled by the power input to the motor. As shown the filament is pressed by a roller 25 against a roller 24 fixed to the output shaft 26. In other forms the connection between the filament and the shaft is obtained by wrapping the filament about a roller on the shaft through such an angle that the frictional contact prevents slippage. In a further form the spool from which the filament is drawn is mounted directly on the backwardly biased motor shaft. Suitable electric motors are A.C. multi-phase motors or induction motors.
