[Also in Group XXXVII] Paper web 1 is drawn from reel 2 coupled to D.C. motor 3 which is connected to generator 4, the tension in the web being detected by roll 6 mounted on spring-biased lever 7. When the tension in the web decreases from a desired value, and the lever 7 swings in the direction of the arrow A, tachometer generator 13 is rotated to supply a control winding of transductor regulator 15 so that the excitation of a generator field winding 16 is reduced. At the same time, contact 8 is displaced with regard to contact 20, and a further control winding of the regulator is energized to reduce further the output to the winding 16. As a result, the output of generator 4 decreases, the speed of the motor 3 is reduced, and the web-tension is restored to the desired value. If the tension in the web increases, the resultant correction provided by the control windings of the regulator increases the speed of the driving motor. A feed-back component for the regulator is provided by transformer 23 having its primary winding connected across the armature of the motor 3. This enables a high rate-of-change of corrective torque to be applied to the reel when the latter has a high inertia, and a reduced rate-of-change at smaller reel diameters.
