A machine for applying insulation to a stator winding bar of an electric machine comprises a master form 1, Fig. 3, of the same configuration as the bar to be insulated, and a carriage 4 that moves along the master form 1. When the carriage 4 is moving along the straight portions of the master form 1 it is guided by spaced rollers 8 that engage in a guide slot running along said straight portions. The carriage 4 has two fixing rollers 11, one on each side of the master form 1, and when one of these rollers reaches a concave arc it acts as a pivot 12 about which the carriage 4 rotates to guide it around a curve in the master form 1, the aforesaid slot being absent over this curved extent so that the spaced rollers 8 are temporarily free from guidance. The carriage 4 carries a taping head through which the winding bar to be taped extends, the winding bar being mounted such that it is parallel with the master form 1. The carriage 4 is driven by a pinion 6 engaging a rack 7. The bar being taped is held by a plurality of holders that open automatically, Fig. 6 (not shown), to allow the taping head to pass.
