In a system for automatically controlling tension in material being wound, variations in the size of a loop cause adjustment of an electrical contactless transmitter which is associated with a pneumatic member introducing an integral or differential component into the control, through an amplifier, of a thyristor or transductor in the energizing circuit of a motor driving the winder. In Fig. 1, variations in tension of a thread 31 being wound on a spool 32 are detected by a rocker arm 11 which adjusts an induction regulator 3 to produce A.C. signals corresponding to variations in tension from a predetermined value. These signals are applied through an amplifier 14 to control a thyristor 17 energizing the armature 24 of a D.C. motor driving spool 32 so that winding speed is adjusted to correct the tension. The winding motor may be provided with electronic commutation. In a modification, the position of a semi-conductor relative to a light source or an electric or magnetic field is varied in dependence on loop size so that signals corresponding to variations in tension are produced by variations in semi-conductor conductivity. In this modification, the spool is driven by an A. C. slip ring motor controlled by a pair of thyristors or a triac. In each arrangement, movements of the looper follower are damped by a spring-loaded member (not shown) associated with dashpots which introduce differential and integral components of control and have a response which is different according to the sense of adjustment. Compensation for the increasing diameter of the package may be included.
