Abstract

998,087. Tension control device. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 20,1961 [Oct. 31, 1960], No. 37300/60. Heading D1D. A tension control device about which a yarn e.g. an elastic bulked yarn, panes from a constant speed delivery source to a wind up station comprises a rotary member such as a roller, capstan or, as shown, a grooved wheel 20 engaging the yarn, a pair of opposing ball or roller bearings 21, 22 of angular contact, deep-groove, or, as shown, thrust type for supporting the rotary member and means for applying an adjustable load between the balls or rollers and their bearing surfaces whereby the torque required to turn the rotary member 20 is adjustable. As shown the wheel 20 is mounted on a shaft 23 with the thrust bearings 21, 22 on either side. A fixed flange 23a on the shaft locates bearing 21 while a sleeve 24 threaded on shaft 23 may be screwed up to compress spring washers 25, 26, 27 and urge a sleeve against the race 22b of bearing 22. The sleeve 24 which is held in its adjusted position by lock nuts 28, 29 may be calibrated and a fixed pointer associated therewith so that a reading of the load on the bearings may be taken. In an alternative form in which a pair of angular contact bearings are used, a cylindrical extension is arranged on the rotary member to extend inside the sleeve 4 and thus act as a dust seal. A soft rubber band may be arranged in the yarn engaging groove of the rotary member. Groups are given of bearing torque against axial bearing load for different types of bearing running at different speeds. Specification 998,088 is referred to.
