Abstract

998,088. Winding yarn. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 20, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 28066/61. Divided out of 998,087. Headings DID and D1J. A device for winding yarn e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate, nylon or polypropylene from a source delivering the yarn at constant speed comprises a bobbin carrier 2 journalled in a pair of opposing ball or roller bearings 3,4 of the thrust, angular contact or deep groove type, means for applying an adjustable, predetermined loading between the balls or rollers and the surfaces on which they run such that an adjustable torque is transmitted through the bearings from the driving shaft 1 to the bobbin carrier 2. As shown the bearing 3 is located by a step in the shaft 1 while the inner race of bearing 4 is engaged by a spring urged sleeve 5 whereby the bearings are loaded. The spring 6 is adjustably compressed by means of a nut 7 on the shaft 1, a lock nut 8 also being provided. The package carrier is preferably made of a plastics material or aluminium. A graph of torque against axial loading is given and an example is given of a specific winding operation.
