Abstract

[Also in Division A1] In a fishing reel consisting of a spool 8 secured to a spindle 4 which is mounted in ball bearings, the spool has a brake which acts by a combination of friotional drag on one end of the spindle and bearing drag produced by applying axial thrust to the bearings. The preferably resilient friction pad 22 can be moved by rotation of a clamping nut 19 from the initial position shown into contact with the spindle end 18 and such movement increases the force applied by a spring 16 to a pressure member 15 engaged with the rotatively fixed but axially displaceable race 11 of the adjacent ball bearing. This axial thrust on the bearing is transmitted by the spindle to the bearing at the other end. The bearing drag thus produced has a braking effect which increases with speed of rotation, whereas the frictional brake on the shaft end has an effect which reduces with speed. It is thus possible to adjust the position of the friction pad (whose effect is much more dependent on axial loading than is the effect of the bearing brake) to achieve an appropriate combination of the two different types of braking.
