Abstract

954,976. Guiding webs laterally. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Oct. 3, 1960 [Oct. 10, 1959], No. 34410/59. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G3] To correct lateral deviations of a moving web of material from a desired path, the material is passed over a roller rotatably mounted on a support which extends axially through the roller and is automatically rotated about an axis making an acute angle with the roller axis. As in Specification 909,569, two photo-cell/lamp assemblies mounted on brackets are provided for co-operating with each edge of moving material, and a motor operating a lead screw with oppositely threaded portions alters the spacing of the brackets until one is aligned with an edge. Thereafter a second motor 12, Fig. 2, operates to centre the material (not shown), in the present Specification, by adjusting the position of a plurality of rollers 18 over which the material passes. The rollers are free to rotate on ball bearings 17 about axes which make an acute angle A with the axis of shaft 6 rotatable by motor 12 through reduction gearing 11. With shaft 6 in the position shown there is no side thrust on the material, but adjustment of shaft 6 in one direction or the other inclines the lines of contact between the rollers and the material so that side thrust is generated in the appropriate direction to effect lateral correction. The surfaces of the rollers may be of spherical form and they may be fitted with tyres of resilient material. Switches 22 limit travel of motor 12 in each direction.
