Apparatus for straightening wire comprises either a pair of waisted skew rolls rotatably mounted on a carrier and means to effect relative rotation, between the carrier and a reel of wire to be straightened, about the axis of the wire passing between the rolls, or a single pair of waisted skew rolls formed on their surfaces with encircling ribs and rotatably mounted in fixed bearings. Shafts 28 of skew rolls 11, 12 are mounted in bearings in a carrier 14 rotated, about the axis of wire 13 passing therethrough to be straightened, by a pulley 8. The roll shafts 28 carry pinions 29 engaging a fixed internal gear track 30 to rotate the rolls about their own axes. To adjust the rolls angularly relative to one another and, simultaneously, their distance apart, the roll shafts 28 are mounted in spherical bearings in blocks 31 movable radially in guides 43 formed in annular discs 35a, 35b rotatably adjustable in opposite senses relatively to the carrier 14 by pinions 37 driven by a shaft 39. Such angular movement also causes pinions 33, threaded on extensions 32 of the blocks 31, to roll on adjustable arcuate gear tracks 34 on the carrier 14, thus to move the blocks 31 radially. The angular and the distance adjustments could be effected independently. The rolls need not be positively rotated, means then being provided to pull the wire through a wire storage reel 26 may be rotated about the wire axis and the carrier 14 fixed. The carrier 14 may be fixed and the rolls driven and formed with ribs to feed the wire through. The rolls may be formed with continuous helical ribs 42, Fig. 6, or with intermeshing circumferential corrugations, Fig. 7.
