An apparatus B for grinding round material supplied from a roll A comprises a fixed framework 1, a unit 6 mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the direction of advance of the material to be ground, and at least one pair of rotating grinding wheels 4 supported by the unit. The material to be ground is supplied from the roll A through a straightening device D to the apparatus 3 from which it passes through a winder E to form a roll C. A unit F is provided if the apparatus is to grind bars. The unit 6 consists of a drum mounted in supports 5 in the framework and rotated by a belt on pulleys 10, 15 from a motor 8. A second motor 7 drives a pulley 9 connected by a belt to a pulley 11 secured to a pulley 12 which through further belts drives a pair of pulleys 13 on opposite sides of the axis of the drum. Each of the pulleys 13 is connected by belts to separate pulleys 14 on the shafts of the grinding wheels which are thereby rotated independently of the drum. The shafts of the grinding wheels are eccentrically mounted in members 19 which are rotatably adjustable in unison to adjust the grinding wheels to the diameter of the material being ground and to compensate for wear of the wheels. The adjustment is effected by a differential gear unit which is operable by a motor 33 or by hand 37 either when the drum is stationary or rotating. The feed of the grinding wheels may be effected by a pneumatic system 40 which drives the differential unit and receives impulses from an electronic comparator. A pump 3 supplies an emulsion in the base of the framework to a rotary joint 42 on the shaft of the drum and through pipes 43 to the grinding wheels and guides 45 for the material.
